So I'm getting back onto a bike after 25+ years. The last bike I had was a RD200dx re reg'd as a 125. ;) I just turned 47 and decided to have my mid life crisis now while I can still enjoy it. I've been getting the new Fazer ready for
if when I pass my test. So far I've removed and cleaned all the calipers and changed the brake fluid and pads. Changed both tyres to 023's as the original ones (F bt45 R 020) weren't worn out but were 10 years old. Re seated the Quill can and link pipe. Taken off the fairing to tidy up the wiring and straightened up the fairing brackets. Changed the engine oil and filter. Cleaned the air filter. And finally changed the drive sprocket nut for the mod one.
Anything else I need to do?
-
Twin headlight mod?
-
Put the kettle on. Lol
-
Just had a read up on the headlight mod.
Mine has the third terminal on the o/s bulb connecter but it must be disconnected at the other end as its only got the single light. Tomorrow's job is to trace the wire back
-
Headlight mod done. I seem to have run out of jobs to do. Time for a :z I reckon.
-
Good luck with the test and as always;
:useless

pics: Me sat on it before I bought it, and in its new home. If I look a little haggard, well 6 kids will do that to you.
-
You say you cleaned the air filter, what type of filter does it have?
-
Looks tidy 8)
-
Six kids... bloody hell, three were enough to virtually wipe me out.
If it's been stood for a while, you could clean out the carbs, pilot jets and fine drillings, they can get gummed up in my experience.
However if you taken it out on the road and goes O.K. don't bother.
You could grease the back shock linkage and swinging arm.
And check the plug colour, seeing as it's got replacement downpipes.
If the plugs are white the link pipe may need sleeving down, I think mine was a Motad one, and I had to sleeve it down.
-
Invest in preferably engine bars or at the very minimum crash bungs,
That's a lovely tidy looking bike, it'd be a shame for it to be damaged over something minor (which the majority of us have done!)
-
Hmm dont want to worry you --and I may be wrong, but I think that your decals are wrong for a black 98, has it been in a crash before you brought it.
Here is mine and you can see yamaha on the tank and fazer on the fairing.
-
A mate took it out for a spin to check it out, pulls like a train he said, its noticeably more powerful than his Bandit. Fazersharp a couple of fairing brackets weren't quite straight, so I do believe it has had some sort of minor shunt and a new fairing fitted. I quite like the minimalist decals though.

That would explain the lack of "fazer" but also if not a respray the tank if off a later model - hence the logo instead of yamaha.

So do I.
-
I prefer the look without fazer logo
-
agree with the decal comments.
but so what its a nice bike just get out and ride it and enjoy it
they are suprisingly quick and a fair bit quicker than an rd200 although when i had one 1981 it was the fastest bike in the world :lol :lol

I did have a bit of a play on it in a local car park, just to see if I could remember how to ride. It all came flooding back :D :D :D
I loved my RD, in Red, ported, boysen reeds, allspeed expansion, Handlebars rotated backwards to look like clip-ons. laying on the tank with my feet on the rear pegs, and hitting 7000rpm when the power band started. :evil :D :evil :D

You obviously didn't see my earlier question, but i was curious that you 'cleaned' your air filter, is it a standard one or a K&N?
-
Sorry missed that, std filter, looked pretty clean so just blew it out.

Oh okay, whenever you feel the urge to change it just buy a K&N for it, they're about £30 odd on Ebay, a little more money than a standard one, but you will feel a great difference.
It very noticably helps the bike breathe a lot easier, plus it'll last the life of the bike with no maintainence needed for the first 50,000 miles.
It's a winner all round. :)

I thought that you had to re-jet or somthing for one of those

Nope, they run rich as standard so can cope with the extra airflow.
'98's might be different though :lol

i`ll always have 2 smoke in my blood
the fazer is a great bike just needs suspension work n there abit 2T hit 10,000 n hang on :b :b
-
I also did these when I was prepping my '98 earlier this year.
Stripped, cleaned and greased rear suspension linkages and swing arm pivot bolt, (they were a bit dry).
Replaced fork oil, I used a heavier oil which worked for me.
Drained, flushed out coolant system and refilled.
-
Changing my coolant and doing the air filter (already got standard one ) all in one go whilst im in there.
Cooant -- the pink OAT one yeh ?.
I find the suspension just fine - mind you im only 9.5 stone and the bikes only done 16K

I'm more of a yellow coolant man myself, the Motul Motocool stuff.
If you're that light then don't even think about using heavier fork oil in the future, the bike will rattle you to death.

That would explain why I can never understand why people moan about the suspension --- its because the fazer was buit for MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

If you are of the heavier variety, or carry luggage or a passenger it's great, but certainly no good otherwise!
-
I may change the fork oil to 15wt as at 14 stone I'm a little heavier than fazersharp. Once I've used the bike in anger I'll see how I get on with everything standard first though. I'm now out of time to do anything else to it as tomorrow I've got to drive a million miles to pick up a new caravan. That'll probably take me all day. Sunday I'll probably be decorating (again) and Monday I start my DAS course :D
-
15w oil does firm the front up quite a bit, but i personally like the predictability of it over the 10w.
But you will notice it if you go over a rough road for instance, it's not very forgiving.
-
I've noticed an improvement using 15w oil :) The front end does feel a lot better (bar the other issues that have arisen post-crash)
-
Maybe mix 10w and 15w 50/50 to get 12.5w.

Someone did a mix recently with good results, but it's a chance thing, there's no real formula!

50% of each oil would do it :lol

Suspension settings are subjective anyway. Thats why I`ll leave it standard for now, of course when I`ve a bit more experience it will be time to experiment to see what suits my riding style. 10w, 25/75%, 50/50%, 75/25% or 15w. One of them has to suit me.

You're not exactly Andre The Giant judging by your photo so i think you'll find that 10w oil will suit you just fine :)
-
Small but surprisingly heavy :eek
-
Been bit busy this week, but got some stuff ordered of eBay. A set of crash bungs, a TRX 850 rear caliper carrier and a YZF750 caliper.
-
Well the crash bungs are on and the YZF rear caliper is fitted.
The caliper was a bit of a pain as it was supposed to be working well. I put it straight on but wasn't happy as the pistons were very stiff to return and left the brake dragging. Took it back off and cleaned up the pistons but I'm STILL waiting for a seal kit. Refitted it with the old seals, So it can come off again once they arrive. Ho Hum. Can't really complain as the caliper was only £25.
OK its confession time. I did my DAS course last week an failed my mod1. My fault for going too fast through the speedtrap in the wet. The other guy on the course passed his mod1 but then failed his mod 2. At our local test centre the examiners were being examined so he went out with two bikes in trail. He was out for nearly an hour getting only one minor in that time. On the last turn, only 30 metres from the test centre he dropped the bike :eek
-
Sorry to hear about the DAS 1 fella, you'll get next time.
Out of curiosity, what is the speed range for the swerve, brake test etc - thought it was only a minimum speed!
-
thought it was only a minimum speed!
You need to stop with the front wheel in a box after the speed trap...probably going too quick to stop accurately in the wet. Mine was in the wet and I was bricking it, especially on the swerve..had to have 2 goes at each!
Good luck for next time, you'll get it soon. My mate's on his 5th attempt at Mod2, he's had a CB1300 waiting in his parents' garage for the last 18 months!!
-
Back in the day I just went round the block and the bloke was on foot and one emergency stop in front of him--- test done and passed.
I wonder if I would pass today ?
-
There isn't an upper limit on the speed, just the 30 mph minimum. To be fair I did come through it at 45mph and he didn't put his hand up until I was out of the cones so my emergency stop looked a bit long especially as it was wet. If the examiner hadn't had an examiner watching him then I reckon he would have passed me.
Where we did the mod 1 training was all lumpy tarmac, clods of mud and blowing straw so speeds were moderate and was coming through the trap at about 32-35. In the cage it was lovely smooth racetrack grade tarmac........... oh well next time is the charm.
-
Mod 1 passed :D Was a bit more careful with the speed this time. Just got to wait for a Mod2 date now.
-
Congrats and good luck with the Mod 2 - in my opinion, the Mod 1 is harder :)

Werhoooo :woot

In case anyone missed it in "General" I passed my mod2 today with a massive zero minors. Been out for a bit of a (careful) play to scrub the tyres in. Guess who's a happy bunny :D :D :D

Congrats geezers!!! 8)
