Title: Restoraion
Post by: Wootan on 11 September 2013, 01:33:09 pm
Hi All,
Thought I best introduce myself as no doubt I will be asking for some help before too long. I'm not sure how I ended up in this position but I have effectively been given my Uncle's Fazer. It's a 2001 FZS600 with 16k on the clock. Before you all start calling me lucky it has a bit of a sting in tail. He has owned the bike for around ten years but it hasn't moved for more than a year; in itself this wouldn't be a problem except it was parked outside his house which is 20yds from the beach in Brighton. It's fair to say its seen better days. A breaker offered him £150 but I hate to see things scrapped so I've been talked into a full restoration. I've done classic cars before but not bikes so should be interesting.
I'll try and post some pictures later, I've started tearing it down so the frame can be powder coated, the engine is out and looks shocking; to be honest I can't believe it still ran but after a year of standing a bit of fresh petrol and a charged battery and it fired up first time!
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks
Paul

All of us on here know the black engine paint on the 600's is shocking to say the least so that wouldn't put any of us off!
Nice to know its getting a full strip down and rebuild.

That should all clean up without too much bother. wire brush some sand paper and a spray can of high temp paint will have the engine looking like new in no time.

Need a new chain by the looks of that one, discs might be salvageable but I imagine the calipers will need rebuilt with new seals etc.

Will be a good project and will look sweet when it's done. Plenty spare parts in the classifieds section on here plus loads on ebay too.

Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents here, I had to do a half rebuild on mine, bought it with new engine hanging in the frame by 2 bolts and had to strip front rear, Swingarm clutch and wiring was nackerd amoungst other serious carb problems, rusted frame etc etc,
Any probs you have just throw them up, lots guys on here that know their Fazers inside out so this was the right place to come,

If you need parts just ask,
I have a full engine sitting up( the old one was given to me but cylinder 3 is fried, all other parts are in good enough nik, plus I have 2 sets of carbs, but none complete but if you need certain small bits I can help.

Good to see that restoration is being done on these and not scraped. Good project!!

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the support, a couple more pictures for you. The carb rubbers were rotten through and a fair bit of debris has gone down the inlet ports, I was planning on taking the head off check through everything so not a complete disaster.

Nearly there now, just the front end and swing arm to come off. Trying to decide on colour combination any suggestion for frame, swing arm and fairings?

Good thing it's got stainless downpipes, the originals would have rusted away to nothing

Great progress man!

As for colours then everyone will just suggest the same colour as their own bike (because everyone thinks their colour is the fastest... haha) I do love the origonal yamaha colour of deep purplish blue metallic cocktail, same as my foxeye but got for something completely different. I always think the fazers shape lends itself well to a strip of different colour down the middle. the tank has the raised centre section, the tail unit has the centre section and the front can easily be seperated between the lights or whatever. Go on give it a racing stripe then it'll be super fast. haha.

I had my wheels done gloss black and think it looks much nicer than the standard satin black too as they never looked clean and shiney to me.

Keep us updated!

Chris

I'm never sure with the colours - I can't honestly say I "like" the blue of my bike... but it isn't the same as the later Foxeyes which do look a lot nicer.

I still like the deeper red of the early Boxeyes

But, so far, its the "Lava Red" scheme you get on the Gen1 thou's that I like the most ^^

Dead Eye, that is exactly the colour at the top of my list. I had an Elise in a very similar colour and always liked it. Cant decide whether to go with gun metal frame and swing arm or keep it  black.

Post by: Wootan on 24 September 2013, 10:20:46 pm
Evenin All,
Frame is naked now aside from one head bearing race but that shouldn't be too tricky. Took me a while to figure out how to remove the swing arm bearings without damaging them but got there in the end. Powder coating should start early next week assuming I get chance to clean everything at the weekend. I'm really not looking forward to starting on that engine!

Personally I love the speedblock paint scheme, but when you have a blank canvas then surely go nuts!

Ideas what I gone and thunk of-

Herbie the love bug paint scheme. (Think this would fit well with a flat tracker style bike)

Dukes of hazard general lee (but been done before)

I've always wanted to have mine painted up like an X-wing and my top box painted up like R2D2 (still a possibility in the future I think)

Someone should throw caution to the wind and do a Tiger stripe bike, that guy would have massive balls!

But, while you have the opportunity I'd definitely think of doing the frame a different colour, I think the Daytona's and the R1's look lovely!

Afternoon all, bit ofa thread bump!

As you might have guessed things stalled a little on the project, mainly due to a baby but I've started again and things are coming along albeit slowly.

I've tried to attach some picture of the engine so you can see the progress. During the break a few bits have been lost, nothing significant but and most are easily replaced. I'm current rebuilding the head and have managed to lose the exhaust valve spring seats, does anyone have a broken engine so have some spare or point me in the right direction so I can source some replacements.

Thanks

Are you anywhere near London?
I have this pile sat outside my flat. I took the gearbox out and this is the remains of the donor.

By the way, that looks like an awesome job!

Thanks Bretty.  Unfortunately I'm in Yorkshire, my brother lives in London so I might be able to sort something but he's not the mechanical!  No decision on the paint yet, I'll cross that bridge when the engine and carbs are finished.

Bit of a bump and further update.

I've moved house which put another delay on the restoration; I've also managed to lose all the photos I took during the tear down so that should make things interesting. Anyway I'm moving albeit slowly on with things see the pictures below. I've included a picture of the headlight frame so you can see what I'm working with and appreciate why everything takes so long. Hopefully more regular updates will follow and no doubt lots of questions!

All the best.

Evening all,

Bike is coming along slowly, I'll post some pics but it wont let me at the moment for some reason.

Couple of questions: There are two pipes coming out of the bottom of the air box and in to a T junction and into a filter and then another pipe to lord knows where. I only know this from the parts diagram as I don't remember this from the tear down and consequently I don't have the bits. Any ideas what it does and where it goes?

Also there is mesh type filter in a black plastic bulb on the top of the carbs, it looks like it should have a pipe on it, any ideas if it should and where it goes?

Thanks.

Bottom of airbox is just drain pipes & on the carbs it's a breather mines not attached to anything

What paint did you use on the motor and did you etch prime the cases first?
Title: Re: Restoraion
Post by: Wootan on 04 December 2016, 05:51:18 pm
I used a specific engine paint and etch primer. It wasnt cheap but worked really well, especially for brush painting.  I soda blasted everything first then 3 coats of each. Let me know if you want a link to the paint.

Soda is an abrasive used in sandblasters but its soft enough that it doesn't damage surfaces but cleans off ingrained dirt and staining , it's a bit like washing powder (or in the US of A it's called washing soda) but for use with high pressure cleaning systems.
( didn't know if Devilsyam was joking sorry 😐)

Devilsam, if you go on youtube you'll find video's of people blasting complete engines, something you couldn't do with other media as it would risk destroying the motor if it was to find its way inside a casing
