Went out for a ride today only to be covered in oil from the little allen cap beside the oil level window.
Tried tightening it but it just fell apart in my hands anyone know what its purpose is/what its called or where to get one from
Its an allen bolt with a rubber O ring?

Andybesi Quite a lot of oil spray all down the side and under the bike over the pads :)

It is called an oil gallery plug and plugs the end of the main oil gallery which supplies oil under pressure to the crank bearings.There is also one on the other side directly oppisite. It can be used to check the oil pressure by removing the plug and attaching an oil pressure guage to it. When you replace the plug, replace the O ring also and tighten it to 8 Nm and do not overtighten it as it is easily broken.

Can this plug be removed without draining the engine oil ? I need to change mine too ;)

Lez72 - I have drained the oil and changed the filter but with the plug out oil was still leaking out. The plugs location is slightly above the window but obviously as unfazed says an oil gallery without draining all oil a minimal loss seems unavoidable less so if your quick

You MIGHT be able to get away with doing the right hand side one next to the window if you put the bike on the side stand - you can remove the clutch cover safely doing this so...

As Dead Eye says you should be able to change the right one with minimal oil loss with the bike on the side stand. The left side could be changed the same way if you get some way or some one to support the bike tipped over to the right.

This is extremely true. Now supposing a complete donut overtightened it, and the head snapped off, leaving the bolt inside. How would aforementioned donut remove it? All ideas gratefully received!
Edit: Trend Pro Grabit. £18 from screwfix solved the problem. Relief!

half of the allen key recess was gone too, so there wasn't quite enough grip. tried to epoxy the bit to it first, but no joy.

Cant see why the plug is so expensive tho.
Having just changed the coolent - when you remove the drain plug nothing comes out untill you take off the filler cap- wouldnt this be just the same, or even less so as the oil is thicker and is not so far above the draining hole and so dosent have a head of pressure above

No oil comes out when you remove the plug (maybe a dribble) but mine was misting when running
