Title: cooling?
Post by: adam1000 on 25 August 2013, 06:01:05 pm
Does the cooling fan on a gen 1 only kick in when the temp warning light comes on? when started and left to tick over it comes on as it should after about a min then goes off when put in gear, but never seems to come on after that! if i short the connection to the temp warning lamp both that and the fan come on, is this right?

The wiring on the FZS600 seems to show the same thing.

That's normal, it will only kick in again when the engine gets hot which is unusual unless you're stuck in traffic on a hot day.

Very rare my fan kicks in. Had it kick in now and then when doing things like ride of respect where lots of slow riding. But even then it cuts off again quickly.
Gen 1 dont seem to run that hot.

Fan comes on when required WITHOUT red warning light in normal use if I remember correctly.
Not sure what happens if you short wires out like you have.

its prob ok then, just i was stuck in traffic on a red hot day and my temp warning light came on and also briefly my rev counter dropped to 0? i blipped the throttle, warning light went off and rev counter started working again, although i never noticed if the fan had cut in. i assumed the fan should of kicked in before the temp warning light comes on?

I think your fan / cooling system is ok.

If your fan comes on in traffic / idling / slow speed, it's doing it's job (the bike will naturally run hotter in these conditions due to lack of airflow through the radiator).

At speed, the fan shouldn't come on because there's airflow anyhow.

On my 600, the fan kicks in about 100C, and cuts out around 95C, normal temp at speed is high 60's / low 70's.

The fan on the Gen 1 always comes on if left to tick over for a bit after first starting. Its to show that its working or something.
In other words, they all do that sir. Don't worry about it. The only other time mines ever come on is when balancing the carbs. 8)

After a cold start up in about 1.5-2 mins of idling the fan comes on.
When I get going and stopping at the lights I never notice is going on again unless waiting for a couple of light changes at a slow intersection (on those rare occasions where side mirror to side mirror blocks you going up the middle).

That's normal behaviour from a gen 1 Thou. The fan comes on after a couple of minutes idling (well before engine temp gets hot enough to make the light come on) and stops when you put it in gear. It will then subsequently only come on if the coolant temperature reaches a certain point (such as when stuck in traffic on a hot day). I think the light only comes on if the temp gets "into the red zone" or if there is insufficient coolant.
