If you want to come up my neck of the woods I can take you, but we'd have to meet up here and I'd be looking at a good 150 miles!

I can't commit to this until I know where it'll be headed. Where's your neck of the woods Stig?

Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire- but I was thinking of taking the ride your way up to Fish hill

Well I'd definitely be up for that, of course. But I'll leave it to you LoFos to work out the details.

I was thinking of fast A/B roads up to Stratford for a light riverside lunch/ coffee then head towards Bengeworth picking up the A44 to have fun up fish hill.
Then a stop at the rollrights stones (which I've passed so many times but not stopped yet!)
It's a good 150 miles all round from Berko so more for the southeners, but they are fast flowing roads, hardly used because the majority jump on the M40
It's all only a suggestion though, obviously it depends on others and if they want to stay more south!

150 miles is a nice short spin, what were you thinking of doing after breakfast?... :lol
When I know the full route and start point I'll figure out where to meet you.

I'd suggest Bicester!
Fun roads from there up!
I see the smiley face but I'm trying to think of the extra mileage for the southeners, it will turn into a hefty one for those not used to it!

Agreed, go via Bicesters and cut across towards Chipping Norton, Moreton in Marsh. Nice route. Did that way on a recent London to Shrewsbury ride.

I'm out East London, so bit a long round trip for me. Will see if I can make it.

That would be the return south journey as its one of those where its better heading south on the A44 (especially fish hill (broadway) which is only single lane heading north (downhill)

(Just seeing if I can get another (bracket) comment included here!)

Very feasible, if you came met everyone at Bicester then your route would become a convoluted spiral if you head off after Broadway!

Meh. Still unsure if I can make it, so maybe not always on the ball - the towball that is.  ;)

Parp.

If I bring the trailer, will you guys let me keep up? Either way, not allowed to thrash the bike with the towball on - don't want to risk hitting the chain / sprocket with the frame!  :eek :eek :eek

This is fish hill for those without knowledge, and a youtube link shall be up shortly!

Did that route for the 2nd time on the way back from Wales today. That vid just doesn't do justice to how tight those bends are! Would be very easy to cock up - there's been what looks like a smashed up GSXR at the side of the road on that last bend for about 3 weeks now; perhaps mute testimony to how hard it is to get that bit right. At first (south/east bound) you're just on fast dual carriageway, lulled into a false sense of security, then you hit the first of 3 or 4 bends that just get tighter and tighter. I'd say you've set a challenge there Stig  :eek

Definitely not trailer territory!

Yep definitely. Was coming back from Shrewsbury, big top box and saddle bags on, was hooning it a bit, them bends kept getting tighter, kept leaning further, was worried I was going to drag the saddle bags on floor. Began drifting outwards a bit, good job it was two laes going up the hill and nowt coming other way!

I didn't notice the smashed up bike, too busy looking at the next bend.
Last right hander I briefly touched the knee, I've only touched once on that first left hander, for some reason I just never have 100% faith going up and around here, but I'm always fully loaded up!
There's a little car park at the top on the left so we'll. stop off briefly for anyone that wants to give it a 2nd go!

I've only done it going up the hill, 2 lanes, and still found it tricky. Downhill, with 1 lane? Might be even harder! I only catch the bike out of the corner of my eye cos you can't take your eyes off the road there so can't be sure exactly what it was - there were 2 bikes there yesterday, don't know if the other had stopped to rape the first, or what. Maybe they're both wrecked! :eek

Title: Re: Lofo ride Sun 1st Sept
Post by: Punkstig on 27 August 2013, 09:29:12 pm
Yep, there's a definite route, I ran it yesterday, but looking at the map I'm thinking of cutting off one of the B roads early on that was proper bumpy and heading for an A road instead.
Bicester- head North B4100 up to A422 past Banbury up to Stratford for smoke/ sandwich depending on everyone's opinions.
Stratford- continue heading west A422/ A46 north onto A435
Jump onto B4090 north west and follow it to A441 now heading south, continue onto B4088 follow. That until roundabout junction of A44/ A4184/ A46, stop at services for everyone to catch up.
From here its 6/7 miles to Broadway (fish hill) A46 onto A44 and the real real fun starts!
We follow the A44 all the way through the very idyllic and at this point very noisy chipping norton and just before Fulwell we get onto the B4030, its all 70/80/90 degree twists and turns back to Bicester!

B4030 is right near to my favourite evening ride (when I have the energy!), but I haven't done it yet, so look forward to that. My evening ride turns from Chipping Norton down the B4026 to Charlbury, a cracking little run of tight twisties, point and squirt! You rode the planned route recently, Stig, had they gravelled the B4030 too?
All on my patch and ashamed to say I don't know much of it! :rolleyes
But looks good  :)
Title: Re: Lofo ride Sun 1st Sept
Post by: Punkstig on 27 August 2013, 10:27:46 pm
I rode it all yesterday, B4030 was not gravelled, surface was good!
I used to follow the A44 to Oxford then on to Aylesbury to get home, but then found the B4030 and have never gone another way since. You have to keep your eyes open on this road, its a decent width but when the chevrons are up denoting a sharp corner it really is a sharp corner many being 80 degree minimum, so be aware, I pretty much guarantee you'll running it more often Nick!

As above, I ran it Monday and freakily it was 100 miles to the dot (according to the bikes trip that is)
Get ther early to chill out with a cuppa, I have 3 definite stop and rest places, first one being Stratford which is only 37 miles from mour start point, the 2nd will be at fish hill for anyone that wants to ride it twice and another is at the ancient neolithic Rollrights stones which is a miniature stone henge which should be worth the ride out on its own merits,
Yeah get me, a bit of history in my rideouts lol!

Sorry for being anal, don't want to slow people down.

Not being anal buddy,
I'll lead as I know the route,

The route itself is actually pretty simple, for instance- as soon as we're on the A422 its that one road all the way to stratford, when we get on the A44 its that road all the way to the B4030,
from the start as soon as we get onto the the few places I've set as a stop and smoke/drink point I'll probably mention the next leg of the journey.
Before we leave I'll ask the lot of you who wants to be a back marker, any junction where we turn off (which is very few) we shall all stop and wait until the back marker turns up, any roundabout should be classed as straight on, if its not then again we shall stop until the back marker shows up.
At the smoke/drink points if the back marker wants to swap with someone else then they can do.
This is a fun rideout made up of riders of different abilities, obviously everyone wants to enjoy themselves so there is no pressure on slower riders keeping up with faster ones and the route itself allows the faster riders to. Bugger off and enjoy it at a quick pace.

For roundabouts, how about having a fast rider as 2nd man drop off? It means the main bodies both know where they're going, and keeps things flowing! Riders could even swap places between fag breaks. Or is that what you're talking about?  :lol

I was going to discuss that in Stratford as by the time we get there we will know everyone's speeds, funnily enough that's the role I normally take in the tipple run, also known as 'sweeper' but still requires an allocated back man.

I'm really looking forward to this - looking forward to meeting more of our little community, having a natter and a bit of banter face to face, and just enjoying the day and the ride with some good people. I bought my bike to ride, and that's what we'll be doing; summer won't last forever folks! So if there's anyone else out there who's thinking "I'd like to do that", come on, get yer skates on and get involved! And it won't all be flat out lunacy, you go at the pace you're comfortable with, and there'll always be others at your pace. The breaks Stig has planned will allow for everyone to catch up if some get ahead, and others will hang back for you too. That's the way it works. :)

can you check that Bicester post code!!!
It doesn't correspond with the description in the other thread about this meet.
Also google maps has it in 2 different place on the laptop and on my mobile.
This equals me being confused.

Had that problem myself Nick, so I checked with Stig last night. If you zoom in on the roundabout where the A41 does a 90 deg turn, you'll see the Little Chef meeting place.

Had a few questions about this but yeah- as Nick said, the roundabout where the A41 does a 90 degree turn its there.

Coming from either direction on the A41 you can't miss it, I think its the only petrol station!

But if you see 'Bicester retail village' then yeah, you have missed it, but only by one roundabout!

Poor Christo, just as he'd got it running again...

From what I gather, the merc in front of me, which had been moving fastish emergency braked (reasons I won't discuss) - I ran out of road, hit his lights, and the bike went down under a Mitsubishi. Which will probably be written off too. The Mitsu did most of the dammage - took a lot too...
