Title: Blue side lights, legal? Discuss...
Post by: JZS 600 on 18 August 2013, 12:04:02 pm
So, doing a POWDER check yesterday (and it's not even MOT time yet!) I noticed that one of my side lights is out and I decided that it's time to replace both of them. I saw another BLUE (in other words, fast) Fazer 600 with these little blue side lights that looked rather good, really.

A couple of things,,, are they strictly legal and where do you get them. Looked at the Yam manual and they're not that clear on the type of lamp quoting: Auxiliary light 12 V, 5 W × 2

SO, before shelling out when I know where to get them from, what's the opinion on the legality here, bearing in mind I ride into central London every day and it's filthy with plod.

As long as it doesn't flash and only shows to the front, it's legal.  If it is a filament lamp rather than an LED it should be E marked.  See http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/regulation/11/made (http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/regulation/11/made)

Fit them at your own risk and end up explaining to the magistrate why you chose blue lamps.
You can shout legislation from the rooftops all you like in front of a cop on the street, but he will probably report you anyway if you start giving him shit about it.
Ain't worth getting a pull of you ask me. Just put white ones in. ::)

White, yellow and amber to the front only
you can have green if you're a doctor
Its c&u regs. If you show blue to the front you immediately become a twat, hth

Not legal, I have blue ones on the fazer 1000 and green on the zx6r. Both could land me a fine if the copper wanted to stick to the rules.
That said I had them on the fazer for 5 years now and other bikes long ago and never had a fine yet.
I know the risk and won't complain if I get caught.

Any blue lights flashing or not r illegal. Ur only allowed a tint. And even the percentage of that is regulated.

I hate blue lights on non emergency vehicles. If I catch site of a blue light I start planning for a passing emergency vehicle, so if the roads are full of other vehicles with blue lights it takes away the impact that a blue light should have.

I have Blue led sidelights on my Blue bike  :D ,They are an MOT failure so i just change mine when the MOT is due,as for being illegal i'm not sure but i have passed many of police cars without strange looks from them or even being stopped,i din't understand why someone would get points for having them? they don't flash alternately so it can't impersonate an emergency vehicle? Why do i have them? because everyone looks for a white light on the front so having a different colour makes it stand out just a little bit more  :rolleyes

They probably wouldn't pull you for it chunk, bit it'll certainly give them an excuse to give you a ticket should they pull you for something else. Its a £50 fine or a VDRS form so you'd have to get your bike certified as correct at an mot centre.
Is it worth it??

Somebody on here did get pulled for it, a few years back. On the m62,if I recall, can't remember if they got ticketed or just a bollocking and "fix it".

You'd probably need a copper who'd got out the bed the wrong side for a whole month, but as Steve says, why risk it?

Ray, how well do those stand out in full daylight? Reason I'm asking is that I'm thinking about fitting solid black h/lamp covers (daytime use only of course!), and was wondering about mounting some small bright lights under the "chin" of my front cowl to compensate somewhat for the loss of daylight running lamps. The bike is bright yellow, but still don't trust foccing cagers to see it!  :rolleyes

Hi,I think it stands out quite well,I have stood about 100 mtrs away & it still looks bright but if you do fit them you might need to angle it slightly upwards so on coming traffic see it better, but don't but cheap crap as they don't last? Here is another pic taken further back from the last pic.

They look pretty bright, how have you mounted them?

I tried using number plate sticky pads but they didn't work so i used 2 self tapping screws & as its underneath the fairing it wont show  :D  any holes if you take it off, they are connected to the left sidelight connector block, all i did was strip a little of the plastic off the ends & put it in the block before reconnecting it

Cheers Ray, I'll look into it a bit more before committing, but seems like a pretty good answer for what I want.
