Title: Tail lights on all of the time.
Post by: Liroka on 11 August 2013, 11:21:51 am
I've been working on my ol' boxeye; replacing the shock and opening the headlight unit to see why my headlight was pointing up and why it wouldn't adjust. I've put everything back together and now my tail light is constantly illuminated even when my lights are switched off. Aside from this there's no response (in the light) when I engage either the front or rear brake. I thought it might be a stuck brake switch but the light is definitely just 'tail light bright' and not as bright as when the brakes are engaged. I did also replace the rear brake switch as the original was a little corroded, though this was changed after I noticed the problem with the lights.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really don't want to spend another week stuck in A1 traffic!  :D

Update: If I disconnect the rear brake switch the lights go out. I've adjusted the rear switch to both extremes and nothing is helping. Could there be a short elsewhere that is causing this?

With the rear brake switch unplugged do your lights and front brake switch work ok.
For example side lights ON normal brilliance?
Side lights on pull front brake, rear lamp gets brighter?
Do front lights work as normal?

If it was me I'd unplug the rear light switch connector and see if the light goes out. Then cross the terminals with a bit of wire and see if the light comes on. If it does then you know your wiring is ok and the switch is the problem. If the switch is the problem try taking the rubber boot off the top of the switch and spray lots of wd40 into it and then work the spring up and down with your hand. Then adjust the height of the switch again.

Update & Resolution: Problem was down to a combination of the rear brake switch and a special moment on my part.  :o :o :o

Nothing to see here, move along.  :lol

It was something to do with only adjusting the original brake switch from one extreme to the other.

The replacement was only a couple of twists from perfect.  :oops    :lol

Don't worry there's quite a few on here that are more than a few twists from perfect. Lol
