Title: Speedo erratic - front wheel not been off
Post by: Lambonumber5 on 23 July 2013, 08:35:56 pm
I have the intermittent speedo thing going on , often showing 120+ that has got progressively worse over the last couple of weeks, and I'm after the most likely culprit, and what can i determine without replacing parts as part of faultfinding

Not getting any Rev-counter error codes, and with v low milage it's still got the original front tyre on it - so suspect no lugs or anything broken / misrouted  (front tyre being changed in the next couple of weeks)

Seem to find advice if speedo completely dead, bit less for intermittent.

Any advice?

Cheers, Gary

Check that the wire hasnt come loose from its clip and is not rubbing through grounding out anywhere.

Mine rubbed through causing the same problem.

Yep- sounds like the outer casing of the wire has split and is grounding out, most likely the lower end close to the fork leg.

Eureka! I think...

I've not done a road test yet, but It does indeed look like the cable could be the cause of the problem.... whilst it was still in it's clip it was wearing itself away against the disc.

I'm surprised but it doesn't look to have rubbed through the insulation, but then I may as well be trying to see life on Pluto with the naked eye its that tricky to see!

is the cable a readily available part should I be need to replace it?

Cheers fellas

Can't see any of the pics you put up but if its only a small wear then just tape it up with insulating tape and also either tape the cable to the fork or cable tie it out of the way of anything moving that could continue to wear it away again!

Pretty sure the cable is built in to the housing of the speedo unit so I doubt its replaceable other than buying some standard wire to match and cutting the old off and soldering the new on... I'd go with Punkstigs suggestion, just use some insulation tape :P

Yeah, you buy the whole speedo drive with wire already built in.
Remember this is a digital speedo so we're talking about a wire not a cable in the normal sense of a speedo drive.

As for it grounding out you should be able to see wires pretty clearly.

I had the same problem lately it turned out the black wire near the top of the forks had broken was making contact sometimes. Soldiered it up and Speedo is now working fine.
