Title: Clutch lever freeplay too much even with a new cable
Post by: nrx_red on 22 July 2013, 10:28:09 pm
Hi there, I've got a problem with the clutch on my 2003 FZS600.  I noticed the clutch freeplay was a bit more than it should have been and tried tightening the cable, but the handlebar adjuster was already wound most of the way out.  So I thought I'd have a go at the other end, couldn't get a spanner with enough offset for the locknut so I used a socket (took some welly before it came loose), but the centre screw still wouldn't move and I didn't want to chew the end up, so I ordered a pattern clutch cable to take up the slack.  Just fitted that and it is just the same as it was before.  Is there anything else past the clutch cable which could have worn / stretched / broken to make this effect?  She's got 32000 on her and is mechanically all original.

Ensure the clutch lever end adjuster is screwed all the way in and try the sprocket cover adjuster again with the lock nut removed.

Was told years ago, always buy original Yamaha clutch cable!

I have an aftermarket cable and its perfectly fine - cheapy job from eBay

The adjuster by the sprocket cover can be a bit of a pain though. I used a socket as well :)

Thanks guys.  I'll try the lower adjuster again with the top adjuster slackened right off.  If this works, I might re-fit the OEM cable as there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it, I just thought it had stretched.

Just been out to the garage and tried altering the cable tension at the bottom end with the top adjuster slack and the locknut right off as suggested, worked a treat!  I now have some adjustment on the cable.  Cheers Foccers.

While we are on the subject of clutch free play, can any one explain to me why when my bike is cold I have a small amount of free play but when the bike is hot there's loads? Something to do with the clutch basket/plates/heat???

Sorry for hijacking the threat,
I assume that you had to replace your clutch cable because the previous one snapped - how long do they usually last ?

Ages if you can be arsed to lube them, but an original Yamaha one will outlive a copy without a doubt, and generally feel better.

Thx,
I try to lube it every year -  it's not an old Jawa with a semi automatic clutch (if your clutch cable snapped, you clutch would still engage when changing gears).
