Title: cooling fan doesnt seem to kick in
Post by: clayt74 on 12 July 2013, 03:22:00 pm
With all this hot weather I would have expected my fan to kick in occasionally at lights or something?
The fan isn't seized and my coolant levels are fine, but after a good run and then stopping at lights for a few mins I can smell the heat of the engine( if that makes sense) but still the fan never kicks in, even when I get home then leave it ticking over for 5-10 mins.
I know the fazer fan is known to be rare to kick in but was wondering what other people ate experiencing before I dive in to test the fan and switch.
Cheers people.

Testing couldn't hurt I guess but as you said, it is very rare for the fan to kick in.

I replaced the radiator on my bike with my old one but the fan on the old one had sort of melted (burnt down bike) and the current one decided to sheer off of the old radiator so it was also useless. So, I've been running the bike without the fan and I haven't had any real issues because of this

Mine kicks in if i leave it ticking over in warm weather, but i've read on here before about some people who have never heard their's starting at all before?

only ever had mine kick in once, whilst riding through traffic in matlock bath.
had a decent ride before and was a warm day.
even after a spirited ride, a set of lights won't make the fan kick in for me.

I haven't noticed mine kicking in when riding in the UK during recent warm weather.

I know it works, because it came on a fair bit when I was riding in Italy couple of months back.

So by all means test, but what you're seeing sounds petty consistent.

You can test if it works by giving it a fair bit of throttling when it's standing still. I've never had mine kick in during traffic or normal driving. So once I tried it by warming it well on the centre stand and by golly the fan did actually start.  :eek  (And stayed on for a about 30 seconds, Finland eh)

There's is always the chance it's not kicking in because you have a healthy cooling system.
If all the fluid is flowing correctly with no blockages or scaling then the coolant may be doing the job well enough on its own!  8)

According to the Haynes manual the switch only shorts at about 102-108 degrees C !!!
That seems a bit high to me?

Sounds pretty reasonable. Especially since the Fazer is almost half air-cooled.

These bikes are fantastic at not overheating, my fan has only come on twice in this recent hot weather and that's with all the stop start traffic of London, sometimes riding in it for hours at a time with only a couple of minutes where the engine is switched off to pick up or drop off work!

Yes thats absolutely right.
Mine only has ever come on once in 4 years and 10,000 miles, mind you that was 3 and half years ago :lol  maybe i should check.

If it overheats it will dump a load of coolant into the expansion bottle and probably out the overflow pipe and onto the ground. If its not doing that then it's probably not over heating but its no harm testing it to be sure.

That's a sure sign of a blocked system when that happens, time for the Radflush.
It shouldn't dump coolant with a clear system and correct fluid levels.

Yeah if all is well it's not going to happen because the fan will kick in and it won't overheat. But if there's a problem like the fan's not working, or the thermostat's not working , or you're losing pressure or it's blocked like you said then it will over flow if it gets too hot that's why the expansion bottle is there

Good news, tested the fan and it's fine...... Tried to test the switch but the Mrs's went nuts when I tried to boil my switch in coolant on the kitchen cooker??
So am gonna wait to ride to a remote location n blip it good n hard!
Thanks for the feedback tho.
