Title: Polishing your helmet
Post by: Frosties on 02 July 2013, 08:11:17 am
As per title really fellas - any good tips on getting my helmet to look good for the ladies again!

To me its just a paint job with a clear laquer (i think) so in my eyes no different to a car. 500ish miles a week of motorway and London has taken its toll (8 months old and 17k miles covered) even though it gets a wipe over every day (still trying to get one of the girls to spit on it and rub it but no takers yet for some reason  :lol ).

Anyone using regular car polish? Was planning on using my car method of the 3-stage Meguirs (Clean, Polish, Wax)........or is this a big no no!

Any advice appreciated in advance .

Cheers

yes, very much so.

Most regular polishes will be fine for your helmet. be careful with the visor though as some products can react with the polycarbonate and cause cloudiness (not an issue with the helmet itself due to the lacquer). I assume you mean hand polishing, and not via a rotary or DA polisher? in which case there shouldnt be a problem.

If your polishing with a machine you need to be careful of your removal rates as plastic removal rates are significantly higher than metal rates, so a strikethrough can happen more easily.

Or in short. Yes. Whatever your using on the car should be fine :lol

Had my Arai resprayed, it was originally burgundy in colour, but wanted black to match my bike, then added hi-vis white Arai stickers on front and back to finish it off.  :)

Loving the respray but reckon it would cost more than my helmet is worth.

No plans on using a DA polisher (friction burns) or clay barring, just a good old fashioned hand job  :D .

Might give a can of Barrie a go as mentioned by Stevierst.

Reckon my helmet will look good and probably smell better as a bonus - thanks fellas!

Mr Sheen?   that actually works well, and does'nt cloud the visor?  If so, I think I'll give it a go, I only use soapy water for the visor and something better would be welcome.  Doesn't go streaky ?

I spray it on and polish it off every day before I ride, and have done for about 10 + years. Doesn't streak, run or cloud, water beads off instantly (for the first 1/2 hour) and it smells lovely :D

I've had 2 visors ruined by using normal Rain-X before, they ended up looking like they were covered in diesel.
I know some people use it with no ill effects but it's definitely not suitable for all visor makes.
Plus it's designed for glass anyway!
There are other similar brands designed for plastic, but i've yet to find one that works at all on my Arai visor, rain sticks to it like oil droplets, which is why the Vee Wipe is so important for me when it's raining.

Yeah, it's such a simple but essential bit of kit, i can't do without it in the rain.
