Title: Re: Broken exhaust header clamp
Post by: mobile mouse on 12 June 2013, 09:19:19 am
Hi,

Bike passed MOT on Friday.
The inspector pointed out that 3 of 4 header clamps had snapped on the exhaust, thankfully there was no exhaust gasses escaping at the time and it passed. But since I have started to hear a slight muffle sound from the exhaust so I am thinking that maybe some gasses are starting to escape whether it's after the engine is hot/cold not sure.
In January only one was showing a crack. Now 3 have broken in two, probably the steel is not up to the job, anyway

Again it looks to be a common issue with SS exhausts from Sandy Bikespares which mine are as well. the clamps are about 6mm thick and the steel must be inferior quality to the OEM units.

I still have my OEM units, somewhere in the garage but if I am to effect the repair that Fazerider did back in January:

Then I need 8 OEM clamps.
Does anyone have a set off 4 from a scrap OEM exhaust that are not bent that they would be willing to sell.
regards,

Hi Mobile Mouse

Got your PM, I'm affraid I binned them a week or 2 ago.
The whole OEM exhaust was in pretty bad shape so the metal would have been weak.

I had a thought you could speak to the guys at Motad, you might be able to buy 1 or 2 of the clamps from them.
Alot of good things been said about them so could be worth a shout.   No harm in asking.

Comes down to price obviously but you'd have the confidence if your handy works good its not going to disintegrate.

Let us know what you get upto.

Andy

I did mention the forum and I did get a good discount.

He said they were £6 each and I was buying 8, add vat and delivery and it soon adds up.

I need to brush up on my filing and use of a hacksaw.

Not to bad since I ordered then Thursday.
Now it's a case of cutting and filing.
