well theres loads of roads around Loch lomond that make for a nice ride, depends how much a detaour you want to take really? about 3-4 miles past balloch there is a place called luss that is right off the A82 (it is a crescent shaped road, so if you follow it through it leads back onto the A82 at the top end). its only 3-4 miles of road, but it is the "old" Great western road and is much more twisty single carriageway rather than dual carriageway. also some nice views on this road.

Top tip as well if your not familiar with the area. fill up with fuel at Milton, in Dumbarton on the A82, its the last petrol station right on the A82 for miles and miles if your going north  ;)

Have fun, and cant wait to see the pics...

A82 Heading up to  Fort Bill, Tyndrum, Green welly cafe lots of bikes stop here you can fuel up here to.

Fort Augustus up to Inverness take the B862/B852  this road is not as busy as the A82 no  coaches or trucks in your way,

A832/A835 up to Ullapool cracking biking road, and plenty of camping, hostels, B&B in Ullapool,

If your returning back down t'other side I can recommend the Ardlogie Guest House at Aviemore 01479 810747.

A93 Ballater down to Blairgowrie is not to be missed another cracking biking road, prepare for take off  :eek

Alyth Road Blairgowrie B&B Old Cross Inn 01250 875502 is very good.

Hope you enjoy Your trip

If your heading up past Fort William turn off the A82 at Invergarry onto the A87 to Kyle of Lochalsh.....probably the best biking road in Scotland

I don't know which way you are going on your way north and how much play time you have. If you go via Gretna, Dumfries (A75) then from Dumfries to Thornhill (A76). Thornhill, Elvanfoot, Elvanfoot, Wanlockhead ( highest village in Scotland ), Sanquhar is a superb road and mentioned in lots of mags as a not to miss. From Sanquhar you go staight to Kilmarnock, Glasgow, Loch Lommond  :)

I agree with bigbluebear - the Kyle of Loch Alsh road is a beauty...never know whether to take it easy and enjoy the scenery (especially through Glen Shiel) or head-down an' give it some! :) :) :) :)

And a P.S.
Anyone who hasn't ridden this road needs to put it on their to-do list...
These are just through the Glen Shiel bit - the road itself is every bit as enticing!  :)

Sorry, just doing my bit for the Scottish Tourist Board!
If any of you guys know of a better biking road in Scotland, I'll be sure to make a point of checking it out on my next trip up that way  :)

You could carry on from Kyle of Lochalsh over to Lochcarron and then take the Pass of the Cattle over to Applecross, stunning scenery, single track roads but well worth the time IMHO. Enjoy your time in Scotland and watch out for the midges. :lol

Was a decent ride yesterday started at Inverness working our way up the middle of Scotland a836 I think not that it was actually an a road (wasn't a B road either it had passing places) it did have stunning views too literally seen 3 cars on the whole stretch of road. We went though Lairg, tounge then to dunnet head and onto our final destination John O groats which was fresh to say the least.

Aye theres a few roads up there that are single track and still classed as A roads..  :eek  would love to be up that way right now.. loving the pics tho

You mention Tongue.. I bought the wife an " I LOVE TONGUE tee shirt from there years back.. she refused to wear it in public for some strange reason.. She was bloody lucky I couldn't by myself one from a place we visited on Orkney.. a nice little village called TWATT.. ( Passed a nice place in Ireland called MUFF too, wonder if they have Tee's)

I laid my fzs1000 down at tongue while trying to turn round.....lost footing on loose gravel :(  had to ride back to inverness on that road with no brake lever!!!!!!! I had done john o groats---dunnet head---tongue and wanted to get to the furthest north west point before heading south, so that is still on my 'to do' list.....maybe this summer?

Esetest, go, you'll love it. But do take a good midgie repellant, especially if you're going in August - they really can be a serious pain. If you forget it, don't be affronted if you go in a shop up there and they recommend Avon Skin-So-Soft - it really does work, and you don't go round smelling like a chemicals factory! I don't know what those who really know think, but I'm guessing they might not be at their worst this year because of the long winter?

Yip, I would say you were very lucky with the midges. They have just appeared here in the last 2 days so it's skin so soft twice a day for me now, unless its windy.
Glad you enjoyed your trip and the weather was superb, lucky man. Shame you blasted through to Hamilton first off as you missed out on some super roads very close to the motorway, time is a bummer when the weather is so good  :(
