Title: Starting on the button.
Post by: Davebo on 12 April 2013, 12:47:35 pm
Please can I gather some opinions ? My '04 Fazer 1000(S) likes a handful of throttle to start from cold.

Call me picky but I like things to start 'on the button'. I don't want to be having to put in throttle to get the bike started (from cold, choke out).

Is it something that needs adjusting or do I just need to accept that's how it is ?

BTW, pre-start blip didn't seem to help.

TIA, DBo.

my '04 often doesn't like to get going from cold - and from very cold it really doesn't like it - usually a few attempts with the choke open does it but, like you, i'd prefer it to start straight off (my thousand year old CB500 does!)

Mine starts on the button warm and on the button cold as long as I use a touch of choke for first 30-60 seconds.
What state of tune is the bike? Reg serviced? Any mods? Carbs been balanced?

Mine has ivans full monty. Well known for improved starting as a side effect.

Mine is an 04 too and it does need a little throttle when cold, and like steve I also have use of a CB500 that starts with no extra juice too. I don't think a touch of throttle is too much to ask for a bike that delivers so much else :)

03 took at least two goes to start from cold - sorted by getting a new Motobatt battery - started first time after almost four weeks of cold weather and not being used.

Ive got a little theiry on this issue regarding what mods youve got, found it interesting when my bike was and wasnt starting on the button recently..........

But alas i have a mere 600 so i will have to post my theory in that forum & you'll have to peek over the fence like a 600 wannabe! :lol

Mine used to be like that. Having the bike ivanised really helps, no choke in summer, a little in winter, also  advancing the ignition seems to help aswell.

Mine was a bit of a pig to start until I fitted the Ivans kit. That being said I also balanced the carbs after fitting and since then needs very little choke to start from cold. With the weather getting warmer hardly needs any at all.

Tbh I tend to give any bike a little blip of the throttle when starting. Most of all ones running carbs... Just gives it a extra helping hand.

Every carbed bike I have had liked a little throttle with the starter unless already warm. Every injected bike has disliked it.

Makes you feel a bit manly in my opinion, giving it a little blip to start it.

Makes it mean more than starting a car, makes me feel like I'm involved more.

Not like it's difficult  :D

Makes me feel like a pro at starting my bike anyway...
