Hey guys, found a crack in the bore of cylinder 3 so i'm gonna replace the barrels, is it necessary to drain the oil for this? I'm not entirely sure how high the oil level goes inside the engine when it's full? I've only ever gone as far as removing the head which doesn't require the oil being drained. Would appreciate any help

Hi there. You won't need to drain the oil but you will need to drain the coolant ;)
-
If you've filled it to the correct level as marked in the viewing window, that will (surprisingly) be the level of the oil. :)

Cheers, ye coolants drained, head's already off. I'm also wondering if I should use new o-rings on the pistons? or just lube up the old ones?

Might as well change them while you've got access, if you can afford to do it. Probably not essential but definately won't hurt.

Maybe you might ask yourself this.......... "Do I fancy stripping all the engine down and back again if something goes wrong for the sake of £50".

Picked up a new base gasket, was only £14, cheaper than the pattern part! Asked about the piston rings, they come in sets, 4 sets is about £150, so I'll leave it.

bit of a gamble not fitting new rings at same time...but probs what i would do as those rings are a bit expensive :eek ...base gasket is the cheap one as is just an oil seal..head gasket has to seal in all the power ,£30 when i bought one last year

I probably need to buy all of these things and it's beginning to sound expensive... :P

If you change the rings its a good idea to hone the bore's ,or at least take the glaze of with emery paper, or the rings might never bed in
