I have a mint 2001 FZS1000 with only 11k on the clock. As it is 13 year old I've decided to change the fork oil. I emptied the tubes and some smelly grey stuff came out so i'm glad I decided to change it. I need to re-fill the tubes...
Can anyone give me any advice on the weight of oil and the quantity/air gap to improve the forks without changing the springs?
If I were to replace the springs what would be the best/most cost effective way of improving the forks?
I have just fitted a brand new original shock to the bike.
Thanks,
JOHN

2.5w oil helps suppress the harshness a good bit. I replaced my springs with those from an XJR1300 to cope with the extra weight.
Other options are rebuilding them with aftermarket cartridges such as those made by k-tech or fitting other forks.
Mike (Falcon) went with USD R1 forks & yokes which are great.

I went with R6 2003 RWU forks which fit the standard Fazer yokes.

i firstly went with a respring and re-oil and now have an R1 front end.
firstly, what weight are you, that will determine if you need a respring.
secondly, as has been said a lighter oil gives a smoother damping action, but you need to experiment with air gaps as the rebound is a lot softer.

I'm around the 16 stone mark (but the missus would like me to be 13) and although I don't often carry a passenger, I do carry luggage on trips.
Other posts on here talk about using 10w oils and specify air gaps... All I'd like is to get a good feeling, well damped and sprung front end using as much of the original bike as possible.

0.95 or 1.0 kg/mm linear spring
5 or 2.5wt oil 140mm air gap or 440cc per leg.
don't forget to bleed the suspension

download a manual, far easier than me explaining it to you.
