Title: clutch lever switch
Post by: Stedman8 on 27 March 2013, 09:25:25 am
Morning all, just a quick couple of questions - underneath the clutch lever is a small switch which is normally depressed by a flat plate on the lever ( It allows you to start the engine when in gear while disengaging the clutch )  I have just put some adjustable levers on but the switch wont work until I have the lever set at max adjustment , what I would like to know is a) Is the switch plastic and b) could I shorten it a little so as to allow the lever a little more adjustment, cheers Steve

Ahah! I did not even know this switch existed and may well explain why I can't start the bike with the clutch in!

Sorry for the lack of help, but information on this would be good :D

I fooked mine when trying to remove it (snapped one of the plastic legs off) so I've just wired the switch shut....now I have to remember to pull the clutch it when starting in gear but it's instinctive anyway.

Not paying £11 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-FZS600-5DM4-98-03-Clutch-Switch-27881-/300732198228?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item4605092d54) for a plastic switch!

Levers look great! Is it just a two finger lever?

Longer versions now fitted. I seem to be having the same problem starting in gear with the clutch in, so will have to get the file out  :)

Sharp pair of wire cutters then a quick and gentle rub down with wet and dry to smooth it off - a file may be a bit too rough handling for it, I couldn't tell how much stick the switch would take( it appears to be made of a hard plastic ), and remember a bit at a time you can always take more off but you cant put it back on - as my old metal work teacher used to tell me :)

Thanks for the tip. Just checking - it's the switch you cut back, not the flat plate on the lever?
As you will see in my last pic, I'd left the bolt on the clutch side done up only slightly finger tight, which I discovered 4 miles into my journey tonight  :fish
Fortunately I made it back home with the lever still in place ....

Its the switch that I cut, there maybe a different way of doing it but I think its probably the easiest, the switch needs to slide out a certain length so that you can start in gear with the clutch pulled in so I snipped about 1/8th  - 3/16ths of an inch off it ,and it worked on any adjustment  setting on the lever ( ! to 6 ) just be careful to leave some or you'll be able to start with the clutch engaged  :eek If you kneel in front of the clutch lever pull it in, it will be easy to see the switch slide out against the plate of the clutch lever.

I have heard of people who have taken the switch out completely- I know pulling the clutch in should come naturally but on balance Id prefer a fail-safe :) The amount of times I've been rescued by the side-stand cut-off switch :rolleyes sorry if I'm explaining it as if you dont know what a motorcycle is but I'd rather explain it too much than not enough - the short answer to your question mtread is - yes ,the switch not the plate  :lol

Yep that's fine. Just wanted to double check, and would rather have too much info than not enough  :)
Thanks again.
PS nice levers aren't they ?
