So my rear brake binds ('99 FZS600), I hear it's a common problem, some people have mentioned that an fazer thou rear caliper will fit with a small bit of filing, others say that there's no way it'll fit, theyve tried, and it doesn't work...
Does it work? Is it a worthwhile mod? If so, which model bikes will fit?

Best replacement is a early Fazer 1000 blue spot rear caliper. Getting one is like getting a pay rise in Ireland though!!
There is only a slight modification (about a millimeter or two of grinding away) on the caliper or on the bracket to make the holes line up and it fit straight on. It's a 2 second job. It's an excellent replacement. Keep looking at ebay daily. I stumbled on one for £35 in great condition. I would get double for that instantly.....they are that sought after from Fazer 600 owners.

Goodluck finding one! You just need to file off a bit of the calliper hanger as said by Packie, as the blue spot from a thou will foul on the edge of it, obvious when you try and put them together which bit needs filed.
Anyway, goodluck finding one. Have you considered cleaning the pistons on yours though, a good clean out possibly some new fluid and a braided brake line make a big difference and it really isn't that bad.

I concur with Packie. I put the 1000 calliper on my FZS600 03. It definitely fits with a tiny bit of grinding. You will notice the extra power, but the main thing is that it doesn't bind/seize. Another relatively cheap mod that you will definitely notice the difference from is fitting braided hoses. I have done this on the front and back. Well worth the money.
Good luck finding a calliper, they are hard to come by but not impossible. I got mine from a breaker on Ebay. I will keep an eye out. [size=78%] [/size]

...also I think a caliper off a TRX will do. But I think that caliper is much the same design as the one you have. You could do an overhaul and buy new seals pistons and add braided lines as suggested. But it would be cheaper to get a 2nd hand Fazer caliper.
Keep an eye on ebay and breakers around the country.

Don't bother servicing the existing caliper if you ride during the winter as it will clog up again within a few weeks of being out on gritted roads. I did mine a few years back, it was a waste of time and I ended up replacing the caliper.
Keep your eyes peeled for a thou caliper and save your money.

I also ended up replacing the caliper... you have to be on top of the maintenance on a monthly cycle or the caliper just seizes up and goes to crap!! Highly recommend braided hose and maybe HH sintered pads, just be careful if you go down the HH route as they bite sharp and fast... I found this out to the tune of a new back tyre when I flat spotted it in an emergency brake situation in sunny Whitby last year(cager pulled out infront of me).

...and if you don't want to file off the caliper in case you want to sell the bike and refit the old caliper and re-sell the thou calliper...then you can spend an extra £20 on the thou bracket too. I'm sure it should be a straight swap for the 600 bracket.

Set your ebay search to worldwide, I got one from Arizona and it looked almost brand new.
Going from memory, it cost about £25 then about another £15-20 on postage so about the same as you could get one over here.

There was one on ebay a month or two ago but it was about £30 plus £50 postage to me. which made it a bit much. I've been looking for a while now too.

The thou has a larger diameter wheel spindle so the bracket isn't a straight fit. I figured that getting hold of a 600 bracket wouldn't be difficult if I wanted to put the standard one back on to sell the bike.

TRX850 rear caliper is NOT the same as the 600, it's almost identical to the Fazer1000 bluespot rear, has the same diameter pistons so offers the same improved stopping power & is a lot cheaper on ebay.

I am going to do the fzs1000 caliper mod on my 600.
I have to grind a few mm on my fzs600 caliper bracket or I have to buy the Fzs1000 caliper with his original bracket and grind that one? I don't understand if the 1000 caliper will fit on the 600 hanger?
Do I need a longer brake line?

The FZS1000 caliper will fit on the 600's mounting bracket, you just need to file a tiny bit of metal from the bracket to make it fit. I think you can retain the original brake line too.

Minimum modification is probably why the mod is popular, tho I went with the TRX mounting bracket & a £15 Thunderace caliper.
Although the early R1's bluespot rear caliper doesn't fit, we still don't know if the XJR1300 rear bluespot would fit the FZS600; could be an additional source of rear calipers considering how rare & expensive the 1000 ones are.......
