Post by: Dead Eye on 12 March 2013, 03:12:52 am
Just an interesting thought, are there any particularly enthusiastic gamers on here?

I've spent the last 8+ hours watching the live stream for the launch of StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm - an RTS game which is huge in the e-sports community :) Unfortunately I'm not at home so I'll have to wait until I get back to get online and start playing later this week :D

Yes I game. In varying amounts. Sometimes never off it. Sometimes never on it. Never played starcraft but I know much money is involved for the pros, especially in South Korea where its a big tv event. These guys can earn well in ecxess of a coupla hundred grand a year. What most impresses me tho is that can have several games going on at once andbe doing well in all of them.
A mate of mine plays poker online quite heavily and he said he was speaking to an opponent some time back who claimed he was on about 3 or 4 poker tables as well as playing somethjng like 6 games of starcraft all at once. Its the new chess.

Warcraft (the old one), Warcraft 2, Starcraft - played in small LANs during secondary school.
Then some clan CounterStrike (never very good myself).

Panzer General 1 and 2.

Baldur's Gate, Fallout 1 and 2 (all time favourite).

World of Tanks (Brotherhood of Steel clan, with some crazy Poles and Russians).

If I had 3 lives  (  :)  )  I would happily spend one whole lifetime in the fantastic world of video games. RPGs, strategies and race simulations.

I spend a lot of time on games, even replaying existing ones.

Currently burning through the Mass Effect series (again) but Sim City 5 just got released (granted EA screwed up again), plus there is StarCraft II and the new expansion to Battlefield 3 and I haven't completed Crysis 3 yet :O

Got a lot of gaming ahead in the next week or two including my usual Counter-Strike Source to help break up my working day ;)

I dabble in most genres; Shooters, RPGs, Real-time Strategy, Racing etc

Needless to say, I am a definite enthusiast :D

I like to game, but due to lousy computer performance, I don't play many new games. I play a lot of TF2 and Minecraft though.

I'm playing through Half Life 1 at last - amazing how clunky it looks now. And to think that was the pinnacle of gaming a mere 12 yrs ago!  :eek

I've always been a gamer, although less so at present due to other commitments (motorbikes!).

Favourite games of all time have probably been Civilisation series (CIV2 was best) and Sim City, although I've played most genres at some point, most recently MMOs (EVE Online mostly).

I'm looking forward to Sim City 5 although I'll let the dust settle a little following EAs usual nonsense.

The other one I just head about today is Ni no Kuni - I'm a big fan of Studio Ghibli animation and the game looks wonderful, unfortunately though it's PS3 only and I've always ever been a PC man (or before than an Atari ST).

EDIT: How could I forget command and conquer series!

EDIT: And I've had occasional addictions to tower defence games too

EDIT: And Battlefield!

I have modded several xbox's, have a wii, xbox 360, NDS, PSP and a ninja pc (i920,GTX295,8GB) for gaming........ but since having the kids I have no time.  I also find it difficult now to find the enthusiasm since I'm coping with some fairly serious depression/frustration at the lack of meaning in my life.

I've been playing some pretty cool indie games on Steam and have also enjoyed some of the humble bundles too...

Chin up mate - think a lot of folks can struggle with the grumpies this time of year, but summer is on it's way and it'll seem like a whole new world, especially your first season on a bike, you're going to have lots of fun. Soon as weather permits we'll get you out on one of my welsh tours. 8 hours on a bike followed by your fill of real ale will sort you out!

Well I finally got back home last night to find StarCraft had arrived a day early which was awesome :D

Unfortunately got a bit sidetracked with Sim City and ended up playing until 5am this morning... so far its pretty good and my only real niggle is that I wish the cities were a big larger

I do own an Xbox 360 and PS3 but they collect huge amounts of dust as I am predominantly a PC gamer. I do love building new machines but I just don't have the money :( Current one is 4 years old but still going strong (i7 965X, 12GB DDR3, GTX580) but to be fair, that's what I built it for ;)

Ahh Counter Strike

Started playing from 1.0 on the PC right through to 1.6 and beyond. By the time source came out there were far too many dodgy people and anyone and everyone had figured out the best way to manipulate the console settings. But the old days. Ahh, the old days.
Talking around 2001 or 2002 and headsets had just started going mainstream. I stayed with a mate and we had the LAN set up, prmarily for CS but there were some other good things as well. We got right into Empire Earth for a few months. Sitting regularly til 6 or seven in the mornin.

But the buzz mostly came from counter strike sessions that would last days sometimes.
Unemployment mixed in with part time work and LOADS of hash.

To this day there is no game that can get close to the buzz of being the last man In  the team with near no health and taking out the entire opposition through smart play, quiet movement, some decent aiming and a shitload of luck.  I miss that game. Global offensive has potential to be the best port of it onto console but its useless until they patch it. Which they won't.

I never understood the whole competition thing, I preferred the precast set level thing where I was among against something realistic rather than a spotty teenager hiding somewhere with a snipers rifle.

Reminds me of the cowardice of the u s of a.

Haha

I remember when the updates would be released at like 1am and we'd manage to get a good connection and stay up til somethkng like 4 o clock waiting on the 85meg download finishing.

My mate had a connection with ntl who gave you 56k free with the fone line but only for the first 2 hours so the timer wad always on to get ready to cut it in time.
To teat the download speed and ping of the connection, we'd start downoading a tune on napster. If it was any less than 3.5-4 kbps, we'd disconnect and dial up again to get a better speed. In game we would be happy with a ping of around 200. Any more tjan that it would start lagging out. Totally hilarious. Thankfully broadband started doin the rounds a wee while after that. Pimgs of 20 40 and 60 were always decent. We actually felt the difference hitting american servers where it would rise up to 80. EIGHTY!!!!!!!!!
