Post by: jonnel101 on 15 February 2013, 06:49:32 pm
Hi im changing the oil on my fazer 600 99 model and cant find any min or max marks on the sight glass .

It just looks likes a normal sight glass size but it is all black with a tiny hole towards the top

It can be tricky to spot the oil level, a good source of light helps.
You might need to take the clutch cover off and clean the inside of the glass, old mucky oil does tend to stain it.

the max and min marks are on the engine casing around the edge of the glass not on the glass  :D

I tend to just use the sight glass itself as the min / max mark :| Can't say I've ever noticed the min / max marks on the casing before...

If the oil isn't visible, it's too low. If the oil fills the glass there's too much.

Strip the engine down from the left side, and pull all metal type things out of the way until you've bored all the way through to the oil window.
Then clean the inside with a cotton bud........ ;)

Why Mr Darrssi, our best intelligence from the village would have it that you are, sir, guilty of a simple omission, the sight glass would most surely  need to be cleaned most dlligently from the outside as well as from the inside to be properly efficatous.

I check mine on the centre stand with a torch as the foccing level glass is so awkward to see on your own without some one holding the bike up for you and I don't fancy a 600 landing on my head on the drive

Are you saying you've attempted to check the oil window on your own without the bike being on the stand before?

Na, that's so they can see all the bits falling off as they hit the head spinning top speed. ;D

It's a definite pain checking the oil level with the belly pan in place. :( Have to shine a light in there to see anything. Got to admit, behind the belly pan, I never even noticed the min/max spots. Always just filled it, such the oil is about 3/4 up the glass window.

Also the manual mentions running the engine for a couple of minutes from cold, before checking the level... TBH, I find the level does settle into sight.
