Title: 2002 engine in 1998
Post by: Lumpy on 21 October 2011, 02:00:31 pm
I'm pretty sure the answer is yes but will the 2002 engine fit into the 1998 chassis and the generator and starter motor fit etc?

Very nasty. Did any debris get into the gearbox?
(I'm always paranoid about something locking it when any of the reciprocating bits let go in a big way.)

Great picture presentation but sad looking engine  :'( .
I may be wrong on this but I seem to remember that after 2001 the generator has a slightly higher output and a different plug on the end of the wires. The higher output is no problem but some slight modification to the wire connection point may be required.

I have a couple of 600 FZS engines on the shelf, I normally do them for £250 with £50 back if you exchange the old engine.

Let me know if you are interested

damn, sorry, just ordered a 2002 25k miler from Swindon before I saw this.

You can have the old engine if you like but I don't think there will be much useful on it. The valves, crankcases, crank and one of the rods / pistons are fubarred.

Havent seen this much damage to a faz engine since a certain foccer was attempting to perfect the art of turbo charging his bike.

Hmmmmm, well, no. It just went as I was accelerating down the slip road to join the M27, it felt like a misfire but with considerably more mechanical noise.  :)

No warning, just let go, engine never over revved although had 80 000 miles on her. Other 3 still sounded sweet  :lol

Rather smokey too for the time she was running until the bottom part of the rod securely locked itself into the hole in the front case.

Have you had it from new/low mileage, how long/mileage have you had it for?

OH NO, I bought it a bit sheddy at about 55 000 miles and I have put 25 000 on her. Amazing machine and saves wear and tear on the others in the crap weather. Always good oil, never over revved, etc. although used to the full. Engineering wise, when it's time to break it breaks whenever that may be although at 80k is a little early. At 7-8000 revs, the rod half flailing around will cause a lot of damage in no time as it didn't seize straight away. Had it seized straight away the apparent damage may well have been less.
Title: NEW ENGINE ARRIVED.
Post by: Lumpy on 01 November 2011, 12:36:34 pm
Oh well, the new motor has arrived so need to get the bike over to mates so him and his niper can get them swapped over and backt o riding her again.  must say I am missing the experience of riding her more than I thought I would.

new engine is in and running so she is back in use, must clean the Bird now, and sounds crisper than ever but wondering if the wadding n the can has been rendered ineffective by the oil. Still, glad to have her back working again.
