Title: Exup valve
Post by: fazermike on 02 February 2013, 10:30:20 pm
Hi,

how can I determine if my exup valve is working properly? what are the signs that it isn't?

Thanks.

If in doubt just pop to pats page and do a service.
Common signs are the 7k taco fault. But this won't allways show.
Slack or tight cables can effect the valve by small amounts or a fully stuck valve has diff effects depending on if its stuck open or shut.

Basically just give it a service to be safe and once done once its SO easy to keep on top of.

If its alittle out it can make a big difference, one thing to look out for is the bike not revving out or being gutless until certain revs!

Thanks for that!
I have only ridden the bike once and it seems to ride fine and have not seen a fault code. I checked out Pats page and will service the valve at the weekend just to be sure  :thumbup

Lots of horror stories on this site about the removal and servicing of the exup valve :eek .The stories mainly concern the removal of the bolts that hold the thing in place,or i should say the attempted removal.

Plenty of penetrating oil,  not wd 40,  over a period of a couple days or longer is the order the day on all the bolts..source some new stainless bolts...plenty of advice on here. Once done no problem in future

Im off first thing in the morning to pic this up...

can you do a quick check on anything whilst viewing, or is it best to take it for a run to make sure its working ok? have no issue in servicing them, as long as its ok to start off with, its done 20000, and on a 05 plate..

If you whip the chrome cover off, you can watch the valve rotate as you rev the bike. Depends on whether the 3 bolts come off ok. As has been said, lots of penetrating oil over several days is the way to do it, and pray! If you don't fancy risking it, you should be able to see the two cables moving if you've got a torch.

It will run like an utter dog if the valve is sticking though, either like a 400 under 5000 revs or like a 600 over 5000 revs, depending on whether its stuck open or closed. It'll bog down and generally be horrific to ride.

Love the black paintwork and black engine in that pic, though. That's rare! I've got a black one and they are the fastest colour. And classiest.

Thanks for the info, I'm collecting it quite early, around 0730, so revving it may not be an option, but I'll take it for a quick spin if poss. Its had some light damage, which has been sorted, but its registered as a class D, which doesn't bother me, very good price to because of this.O0

Cool nice one. Black with black engine looks great, if it's the one thing I don't like about mine and the early ones it is the silver engine.
I've never done an exup valve myself, had a YZF750 where the servo failed and it was done under warranty.
Mine on the Fazer is all well and good, but I must look and learn how to do it, so it stays that way.
Good luck. Get some more pics up now she's yours.

yep, will do. done the valve this morning, was seized solid in housing end, managed to drift it out, but bush in housing seized well and, good, may just leave it that way, don't  want to damage it trying to get it out, cleaned and copper greased everything, re assemble tomorrow, spray gt 85 on cover bolts over a few days, and give the socket a few good taps to shock it.

If you do one thing! Change the cover and exup housing bolts for stainless, don't be tempted to reuse old bolts, they are made of cheese! Plenty of copaslip on all parts .
Servicing the valve is dead easy once you done it once, and even easier when its had plenty of copaslip each time.
I used to service mine every oil change before fitted full system. :)

that's funny I prefer the silver engined ones and not the black ones! all bikes seem to have black engines these days far too common!  :rolleyes

Exup nut
If I remember the bolts are M6 socket heads and 10mm long with a washer under each one.
I think I removed old bolts and measured them before ordering, the housing bolts may need to be slightly shorter as they screw through and just catch the casting of the exhaust section, so be careful before fully tightening up.
I got my bolts from Stagonset online.
Best advice is to measure bolts up and take into account , washers under heads as socket head bolts aren't the same as originals that have a hex head and combined washer on them . Hope this helps :)

Exupnut drop me a pm with your address, I will see if I have any bolt kits left over from when I sold some at the Bmf foc-u stand last year.
As said give everything a good coating of copper slip. Don't worry about the bush staying in place. It makes no odds.

Ok, found 5 sets of the exup kits. These are the cover bolts with spring washers and the inner bolts. All in high quality SS

So the first 5 addresses in pm get a set. As soon as I get around to the post office.
I have a couple of other sets but I will keep those 2 as I change the bolts each time I service the exup with fresh ones.
Don't worry about paying, just do someone else a favour if you get the chance or buy me a hot choc if we ever get together at a meet.

So limited offer to first 5. 2 gone so far.

valve in, cables adjusted correctly, pulley lined up with hole, what a clever boy I thought I was, then I tried to screw the bolt in that holds the pulley, only to find, I've damaged the thread tapping the valve out..what to do?  try and tap a new thread, or try it without the bolt, its a nice tight fit, not much exertion on it, and it can't go anywhere...???

Your all wellcome.
as i said i used to knock them out when we did the BMF club stand. but that has stopped now so they were just laying about.
got a bunch of foc-u stickers to but affter reading the the gen forum i think the least said about them the better lol as we also handed out cards and even had some pens made up :P and were going to even knock out the Fatmaggot Tshirts untill it was decided there just isnt enough support for it (the stand not the awsome Tshirts). so saves me having the bolts just sitting here.
