Title: Front discs locked up.
Post by: D4Delta on 29 January 2013, 04:42:30 pm
I'm still fairly new to the Fazer so this might be a basic question - The bike has been in my garage for the period of the snow but I noticed rust on the discs and cleaned them off with acetone as per the workshop manual. Now 3 days later the front discs have locked completely. Iv'e tried rocking the bick but can't get it off the stand. Is there an easy way to free them without taking everything to bits?

As acetone is used to clean them would it be any use running some on the brake pads?

Advice would be much appreciated.

Spray the calipers and disc pads as much as you can see with brake cleaner.
Then rock the front wheel back & forth with your hand untill it moves.
Later remove the pads and clean up.
Gentle rub disc surface with a rubbing pad.
As long as you keep the Disc surface and pad surface clean and dry that should be ok.
It's the damp that causes the problems.

Ps. To stop it happening again, push back the pads just a little, so there is no contact with the disc, or
remove the pads altogether. Lump of wood under frt brake lever to stop pulling it on. :rolleyes
Don't forget to put them back in before you ride it! :)

In future I would bother trying to remove surface rust from the discs.
A wee bit of surface rust is nothing to worry about, and I've never bothered trying to remove it.  As soon as you take the bike it's gone by the end of the street.

Happens to mine too if I park it in the garage after a wet ride. Dragging the front brake for the last half mile of the journey to get it good and hot can prevent the problem, but I don't always remember to do that.
I've only once had it seize hard enough that I couldn't get the bike off the centrestand... I was quite surprised how easily it freed up when I just yanked on the wheel by hand, didn't need to resort to solvents/lubricants or dismantling anything.

A "light" tap on the discs can help, the vibration usually frees the pads from the discs.

Many thanks to all of you - much obliged. Glad to know it's not an unusual problem. Will try to free it up tomorrow.

Safe riding,

David.

Thanks again to you all for the advice. Few squirts & a tap & I'm mobile again.
