Title: Brum Bike Shed Meet
Post by: purplebear7 on 25 January 2013, 08:16:40 am
Hi Guys,

Having already had some rumbles in the jungles over on the (slightly more adult) side  :)  at the Fazer 1000 Owners Club about this years gathering of the clans near (not in) Birmingham.

Following up on some early questions .. and as per normal service routine .. I have posted my annual blurb for the benefit of all the Newbies who have hooked into these Fazer Groups over the passed year.  The intention is to give the new guys a general idea about who does what to whom, where, when and why  :eek .

Have a read below if you are not all together familiar with this event .. then watch for the date(s) to be set later on in the year.  It'll be here before you know it so do your best to get there .. it is often seen as the start of the biking season for many  :D

Cheers Trev.               _________________##________________##____________________

Oh Yes indeed ... The Birmingham Bike Shed  (National Motorcycle Museum) Clan Gathering.

I'm not sure if there could every be a better location for any National Annual Group Meet in the UK?

Perfectly located bang in the Center of England  (The actual 'Middle England' marker cross is on a traffic island  just a couple of miles south .. in the village of Meridian)

Really easy to Find and Access .. Junction 6 of the M42 and A45 (right on the NEC Island) and therefore as fair as it gets for everyone wherever they live .. can't help your post code .. where we live is where we live  :\

Every required basic facility right there on site .. Parking, Toilets, Cafe, Long curved white line for Photo Shot line up  :b   and of course The National Bike Museum .. it's bit hard to find all that in any one other place .. and it's open on Sunday!

As for the date .. always some chat about the weather and holding the meet later in the year .. but there are some very valid traditional 'reasons' as to why it's normally held in April .. no need for me to do the history bit again here.

Main snag with moving it is always the same .. people go away for their family holidays and long haul bike tours in the summer.  No way we will ever keep everyone happy .. so it's still held in April.

As for the UK's 'seasonal weather patterns' .. these days things are about as predictable as a Mad Spanish Bull standing in the middle of the main road.   So shifting things to June (for example) is no guarantee at all that it will be a nice day on the day!  For this reason we have normally kept a Plan-B dry day as a back up the next week-end.

As for distances to and from Brum .. I (we) used to give out 'prizes' for the Longest Ride, all the Biker Babes and Bike Police members (http://static.yuku.com/domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/grin.gif) .. a big fat Mars Bar. Lots of guys have ridden to Brum from Scotland and Cornwall .. I've done it myself from the Costa Blanca (without a Mars Bar  :\ ) It's what your Bike was made for .. ride it!

As I no longer have my wonderful Gen 1s  :'( and am now very happy thanks on The Spanish Dancer .. my big Honda CB1300s, EZS Sports Sidecar Outfit .. I don't feel quite right about attending. However all Riders on all and any other make of Bike have always been very welcome .. so you can bring your mates on mopeds too.

Anyway .. my main plans are done for this year .. I'm already all Booked and Paid for a nice little ride-out or two.

The 2013 main event is a 4.000 mile round trip from Denia (here down on the Med coast) up to South Harris in the Outer Hebrides / Western Isles and back via a loop of Bonny Scotland all on my own .. no matter what the weather girl comes up with .. once again I'll just be gritting my gums and going for it (http://static.yuku.com/domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif).

These days .. I can't afford or justify the 'crazy cost' type finances of doing another UK run before that one .. but it's not so far for you .. is it ?  8)

There you go then .. that's my Annual Blurb on the Bike Shed topic done .. your move people .. any questions .. and as always I'm here if I can help (http://static.yuku.com/domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/ohwell.gif)

Evening all,

I hate to be pushy, but I really need to know times and dates ASAP. I want to make the meet, but also need to book ferry tickets before they get prohibitively pricey.

Anyone going for the 14th for the meet? Can this be confirmed?

I should be able to do 21st and 28th of April if this helps in the decision in any way.  :lol

For guys riding north wanting a convoy there are 2 good places to meet. 1 is super suauasge in Potterspury and the other is Jacks hill cafe the other side of Towcester.

On a side note both places hold various bike events throughout the year..

ok throw some dates at me/us .... April or May ?

most of us know the reason why it always been April but it makes no difference when or
where , we get together in honour of someone we lost and want to remember .
For me personally its time to find somewhere new .
The bike shed itself .. its a car park on a motorway .. end of story.
I Went in the museum once wich deafeated the object of meeting up with everyone but very much
worth a visit ...so if im gonna visit it again it will be later in the year when (hopefully)the weather is better.

I just don't want to travel 100 miles (yeah I know its not far) in the cold or even pissing down on the
motorway to stand about in car park for 3 hrs ...not my idea of fun

APRIL 6th 13th 14th 20th 27th
MAY 4th 11th 12th 18th 19th 25th 26th

there is something on each of these dates but to be fair its never been a problem to park up somewhere .

Sooo
throw some dates back and well sort something out (http://static.yuku.com/domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/happy.gif)(http://static.yuku.com/domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/happy.gif)

 :)   Hi Guys,

Yes Paul .. as per my normal annual attempt ..  I did post quite early on and try to drum up some interest and support for the 2013 Brum Bike Shed Meet (please see the first two posts and photo shoot line up on page one of this thread guys)  If anyone else thinks I'm telling people what to do .. I apologise now.  This is not my intention at all .. I'm simply offering help and advice .. nobody has to take any notice .. nothing new there then  :'(

I know that you don't like getting your bike wet or dirty mate .. it really always was one of those 'almost too beautiful to ride' models  :b .  However I do think you could maybe be slightly more 'Positive' about the whole Bike Shed thing .. even if it's not your idea of fun .. lots of people have enjoyed it big time over the passed  twelve years.

Lots of the new guys might be well put off by your personal assessment of what it's all about. For sure us oldies should be encouraging and helping them (is that not what Bike Clubs are all about)

Lots of Bikers like to rise to a bit of a challenge (you can trust me on that point  :\ ) get out of bed and make it happen, join in and be part of things, enjoy a day out (that's what the bikes are made for really don't you know) and then have the 'well chuffed' feeling of achievement after it's been done.
It's a lot more than ''a car park on a motorway'' in my opinion  8)  you need to put your wide angle lens on  :D

As for finding somewhere new .. by all means do .. but I doubt you'll get a better (more central and fair to all) location without creating another North South divide  :\ .

Whatever .. I look forward to reading the reports and better still seeing the photos.

Bit of Personal Update .. my left hip joint has finally given up big time and disintegrated .. I have had to go asking for help. The Spanish health system is ten times better than the UK NHS and I'm pleased to report that I'm already due to get yet another new steel joint by the end of May.

This means I have had to delay my nice little 4.000 mile ride-out from the Costa Blanca to the wet and cold Outer Hebrides and back down into the Sunshine.  But I promise you all .. I'll have my best leg back over and be off up the road .. as soon as ever I can  :D .

Title: Re: Brum Bike Shed Meet
Post by: pitternator on 08 March 2013, 07:49:49 am
Just be aware that if there is an event on, it can fill the place. One year recently we had to park on the pavement as ALL the car parks were full. The MCM management let us do this, but suggested we have our meet on a day when there isnt an event on.
Like Trev says, its a very good central meeting place, and has decent facilities, plus of course the museum itself.

:)    A Google on National Motorcycle Museum .. will open up a trucking load of info about the Brum Bike Shed.

Including their List of Events for April 2013 ..  8)   It looks good to me .. so somebody check it out and pick a blooming date!  :rolleyes

One other bit I always 'harp on about' every year is 'The Cameras!  :eek    The Bike Shed is bang in the middle of a Camera Minefield! .. The motorway camera testing section is on the M42. The last local press count had it over at 100 cameras (all on test and development settings  :rolleyes ) in a seven mile stretch going West towards the M40.

Then there is the NEC Complex just across the island at the same Junction 6 and the Birmingham International Airport is also within sight .. looking towards Brum on the A45.

None of this is (or ever needs to be) a problem if you ride like a Real Biker in this area .. you WILL be on Camera and now you know  :)

If we're doing Sunday, then available clear dates are the 7th, the 21st and the 28th.

There is a computer fair on every Saturday. Not sure how busy that gets though...

I would personally prefer to go on the 21st. Anyone else?

For me personally its time to find somewhere new .
The bike shed itself .. its a car park on a motorway .. end of story.
I Went in the museum once wich defeated the object of meeting up with everyone but very much
worth a visit ...so if im gonna visit it again it will be later in the year when (hopefully)the weather is better.

I just don't want to travel 100 miles (yeah I know its not far) in the cold or even pissing down on the
motorway to stand about in car park for 3 hrs ...not my idea of fun

although its always good to see old faces/friends like yourself m8 .....quite poss be doing my photo thing abroad again...and I know how much you look forward to that  ;) :rollin

 :)   Hi There Paul,

You and Me .. We go back a long way mate .. so please read this as it's intended .. no hitting .. I really am curious.

I take it all on board as to why (you say) you have not been at these annual Group Brum Bike Shed in recent years ..
It is a good 100 miles from Wigan .. unless of course you want to skip the M6 and make it a fun ride both ways  8) .
The weather may well be cold, wet or both .. some things we have no control over .. so normally a Plan-B day is fixed.
The meet is held on a Car Park (but the National Motorcycle Museum is very handy near to the M42 .. not on it)
Three hours of Bike Related stuff with like minded guys ain't so bad .. once in a year .. some might say it's quite nice.
You maybe more than most might get some good photography done .. you have the pro kit for the job .. in fact three hours might not be long enough.

As already stated .. this venue is very central in the UK .. fair for everyone .. we have no say in any Post Codes.
It's about as easy as anywhere in the UK ever could be to find .. follow NEC signs and the entrance is well marked.
All the required facilities are on site, it's free, safe parking, toilets and a cafe that opens on a Sunday.

So .. my Serious Questions are:
You say you think:  Meeting somewhere New, at a Better Weather time would be more favourable.  You might well be right.

Where and When would You like to meet up?  Where can we find all the facilities in one place on a Sunday? Also can you give me a clue as to what you would want to do once everyone got there?  What is your idea of Fun?  Would you attend yourself on your bike?  I'll not ask you about the weather on the day .. some questions just don't have answers.

End of the day mate .. we all know you ain't gonna be there, no need for any bets Luke .. but I for one would be genuinely interested to have your take on something or is it somewhere better.

Just for the Newbies and the record:  I set up and attended every meeting for the first six years .. before moving to live in Spain.  I have also ridden up from the Costa Blanca to Brum and back to attend this meeting three times in the past seven years. It's a challenge, long distance, often snow on the central mountains in April, always rain in the Northern area of Spain and I get sea sick on the ferry  :\  yes Sea Sick .. Me  :eek .

All in .. I think it's about as much fun as I can have on a bike .. not being anywhere near fit (or young enough at 73) to get involved in Track Days or Off Road stuff anymore.  It's just Me, The Bike and The Long Haul Highway  :b

If you give me your take on you ideas for alternative (or better still additional) group meet up dates and locations mate .. and I'll check my Social Events book .. yes really  8)

Talk to me and as always Stay Safe Buddy  ;)    Trev

the Museum itself is great place to visit ..well recommended. ...but personally for me after a few visits its enough and there is no need to go again, got some great photos tho .

As you say weather wise its impossible to judge...as for where and when ? ive no idea but you only have to look at the other meeting places (that are on this site for instance) there are plenty to choose from...I can goto rivington barn every sunday and it has a café/bar ,many bikes to look at, wich is 9 miles away and do exactly the same as going to brum.(not suggesting rivi barn by the way)

nobody seems to care or be interested anyway Trev , no wonder the site is falling apart , for a start im discussing a meet for what was originally 'our' site on this one not that it matters much the more the merrier .

:)   Really Good Reply is that our Paul ... I am pleased you rose to the task so well!  8)

All good stuff .. lots for the guys (and girls!) on both sides to consider and understand .. also a few bods on this side who are only now discovering 'our' Fazer 1000 Owners group .. after more than 12 years .. maybe we need to have a 'sticky' on both sides?  (Nod towards Admin)

As for the gradual 'falling apart' of 'our' group .. I think the fact that it has always been 100% Bike related makes the difference.   This FOC-U side is much more like a Social Network site .. they play games, have competitions and chat about all sorts of everything .. not just Bikes .. this probably helps to keep the place alive.

All in .. I recon I've done my bit anyway .. truth is I have not been at all 'comfortable' about my (boring old fart) type involvement since Annie and I moved to live in Spain and although I had three of them .. I have not actually owned a Gen 1 for almost five years.  The Spanish Dancer outfit really suits my style  :rolleyes   So I don't think many (if any) people will be reading my words in the same mode as I write them in these days.

That's about me all done on this years Brum Bike Shed Meet I think. I can't get there anyway this time .. I'm on the very short notice list for another new hip joint job at the local Hospital .. and I really can't risk missing their call!

I hope everyone who gets to the Bike Shed has a nice ride both ways, a bit of dry grass to sit on and a few happy snaps for the book.  I'll not mention the Photo Shoot Line-Up .. none of you seem to understand the words: 'Front Wheel On the White Line' ??  :\    Somewhere near the line will not do!

Stay Safe Guys  ;)  Trev

Weather permitting, due to a 360 mile round trip & subject to JP & others attending I will probably go this year.
I've been twice, the first time I think being 2003 when it was organised by the now defunct Yahoo group. (It was certainly the year of that great photo of which Trev is so proud.) & the second visit was 2011.
Despite my previous cheeky comments it is a nice opportunity to catchup with old friends & admire some of the bikes.

Stay Safe Guys  ;)  Trev

First - good luck with the op, hope that goes well!

I am a complete newbie to the site, and to biking. I've only been on 2 wheels for just over a year, and on a Fazer for 6 months. However, the social aspect of the Fazer forum has been absolutely brilliant, and the community spirit here is why I am enjoying my time as much as a Foccer as much as I do now. I was on the Varadero 125 forum, and found that a bit quiet. This site is good fun, it's got it all: the technical advice, the banter and the tits! (see the naughty corner for details...  ;) )

There will be about 5 Foccers, maybe more, having a mini convoy up from Ace Caf in London. Getting out on the bike is always fun, whatever the weather, just some days are more fun than others!! About fortnight ago, I did 100 miles in the heavy, driving snow: Andover to Picadilly to Hatfield. Yes, I was bloody cold, yes all my gear leaked, yes I was all but blind on the way home (fogged up specs). The only part of my bike that wasn't white when I dismounted at the end was the seat where my backside had melted it all! But it didn't stop me. I'm not trying to boast, just saying sod the weather, let's enjoy the meet!

There are quite a few people I have met on the forum who I look forward to meeting face to face. I already know some of the London Foccers, but due to distance, I don't know the Northen bunch that well. The Brum meet is a good opportunity to rectify that.

Bike meets are not for everyone. The post I put up about a huge French event has been largely ignored: fair enough. However, there appears to be a good tradition behind the Brum bike shed meet, and so I reckon it's a brilliant event for people who like that sort of thing. After all, it's always more fun chatting to people you've met rather than just their anonymous avatar!

For those who decide to brave the weather, I shall see you there, and look forward to meeting you!  :)

Hi Dek, yes I aim to be there for sure.

Speaking as someone who has been on fazer 1000s right from day 1 and been on most of the forums over the years, the big reason I do stay in touch with people is the good times we have had over the years, Its been 12 yrs since I bought my first brand new gen1, and its been a roller coaster of a ride through those years. Enuff I may add to write a book , which no doubt I will do one of these days. Its fairly unique for a bike to attract and keep a quite disparate bunch of guys together ...but many marques of bike do have cult following. We all have our own reasons for doing it , and the annual meet is now part of the culture. TBH I respect any suggestions for a new venue...BUT in the abscence of a new venue, and the fact that many do still turn up, I think its time to put up and shut up , till there is somewhere new ( if ever). May I also remind you all that it was Styx who set up these reunions and it is in deference to his sudden death that this meet in particular was dedicated. Hence my thoughts are...RIP styx.

For anyone new to the fazer site, please do come along , as its only with new members support that the whole fazer owners stuff will continue !

Made a rapid depature though as it was just round the corner from where a (very) ex-girlfriend lived :eek
So, I'm thinking maybe I should turn up again this year, represent the North West blue Gen 1 Thou owners, show my face and what not, wot!
Was a few years ago when I went (2008? Maybe? ) but at the end of the day, its a bit special really, is'nt it? Certainly a bit more special than going to The Barn, where I havent been for 7 years!
So count me in, I'm up for this. Sunday 28th April. Be there, or be somewhere else, everybodies choice.
Fizzypies: I'm in Bolton, so if you want to meet up and trundle down together, the Shell garage at Haydock Island ( where the M6 crosses the East Lancs Road) would be a good place. You bring the pies though :lol
I'll pm you.:thumbup

:thumbup    A big 9/10 and a Full Monty Well Done All from me guys .. looks like you made it another meet to remember.
It has to be worth getting out of bed and going for .. the first event of the Fazer year .. I guess there will always be a few who miss out on this one .. but it always has to be 'each to their own'.

Looks like the Weather Girl was in a nice mood for the day and by all accounts Ad The Bad (Kosmic) did a really good day's work .. both leading on the road and then setting up the Line Dancing and taking some nice snaps (I know they are works of art really Ad  8) )

I propose that we make Ad the official:   'King of the Kurves' ... nice job there mate

I was thinking of you all .. as I lay on the bottom bunk in my Hospital room and again after I came home .. I've picked up another very nice long 'curved line' myself .. soon have enough for an A to Z  :eek

So .. Again my congratulations to you all Lads .. couple of snaps to follow.   Stay Safe  ;)   Trev

Hi Trev...

And nice curve  :eek

I'm afraid I can't take all the credit. I'll take the credit for getting the line up into shape but it was out Norm that led the Fazer Owners Club and other Foccers on the way up there.

 ;)

At least 600's don't need chrome bling and horns to get attention, they were the most exclusive bike there ... :rollin

ok i stand corrected best mod for your 600 petrol and a box matches "stand well back"

A rag in the tank and a box of matches would do :-P and that wouldn't put off a die-hard like deadeye whom I believe it trying to resurrect the charred remains of a 600 as time passes.

Btw, do the mods that you've added make the bike heavier ?  I would have thought that machined aluminium with bolts, acrylic etc would have been heavier than the original cast parts.

Just wondering if your mods are just for looks or if they actually add anything worthwhile  ;)

Just poking  :lol
