Afternoon Foccors,
I have taken the swing arm off for winter greasing... and thought it would look good polished!! as you do... But I am having major difficulty in removing the coating that is present. Does anyone know what the coating is? and has anyone done this to their 600 or given up and painted straight over the top? Is there a knack to removing the coating? I have tried Nitormors and I have been sanding for the last 4 hours and my fingers are showing bone!!
Many thanks in advance
Charlie

It's anodised, so is not affected by most solvents and is quite difficult to sand off as it's as hard as many abrasives.
Some oven cleaners contain caustic soda and that will dissolve the anodising... go carefully though, it also dissolves aluminium.

Cheers for that Fazerider!! I shall get some from B&Q tonight!! :lol

yh i used mr muscle oven cleaner to get chain lube build up off my swing arm and stained it like a twat never use anythig like that again my mate also used baby wipes on his excel rims (drz) thay stained too but a bit of t-cut and it was fine.

can you get it soda or bead blasted? if so that should get rid of #top coat# but then you will still have loads of work to get it to polished standards, polished bike bits look great but pain to keep in tip top condition if you ride it!
-
Just an update... 200ml of caustic soda + 300ml of boiling water mixed up... does the job spot on!! Cheers Fazerider for the tip... you have saved me hours of sanding!! :rollin
-
Very thin for an aluminium trailing fork. Does the job tho

throw up a pic or two when you're done charlie 8)

Will do, Dude. :D

So after 20 hours of labour the swingarm is complete, polished and reattached to the bike.... including lots of shiny nuts and a fazer thou shock conversion(not for the faint hearted).... what do you think Foccors??
-
and another shot
-
First shot didn't do it justice, but the second looks very nice :D
Will be good to see a final shot once everything is back together and its on the road :) Gonna be a right b!tch to maintain though :P
-
Looks lovely, but you're not going to want to take it out on our filthy salty roads now are you? 8)
-
Nice one, love the dedication. takes so long to get it to shine like that 8)
-
Stupid question probably but what's that red thing with the bar sticking out of it?
-
looks like one of thoes gizmos to clean the chain
-
do believe thats a chain adjustment / alignment tool. ;)
-
ohhh so shiney! 8) you could lacquer it to help save the shine.
-
love it
-
A set of red radiator hoses would really set off that rear shock nicely ;)
I'll shut up now... Ooooh, look at the shiny shiny :D
Chris
-
Cheers for the comments guys!! much appreciated! :lol so who's going to follow in my footsteps and give the swing arm a polish? :D
Chris I would love a set of red hoses... even found a nice rad as well... if the overtime comes through that im expecting then I shall buy a set!! Is there a confirmed price delivered now? and yes it would be a red set I would want!! :rollin
-
Haha, I'm a very patient man but i'm also far too much of a perfectionist and would always think it could be a bit more shiny. haha! I have a bad enough time trying to get my foot pegs and brackets looking the way I want them, think i'm going to spray them black so I stop trying to clean them! haha!
Ye, the full 9 hose kit is £108 delivered and if you'd like some nice shiny stainless clips then that is another £16 on top of the £108. We're getting an awesome discount, about 40% off what the kits will retail at after the orginal group buy. There is still a couple of weeks, while they make the tooling to make the kits, so Let me know as soon as you can and you might get in on the group order and save yourself quite a few quid if not then let me know when you do want a set and i'll see if I can get you a kit at a discounted price.
Cheers,
Chris
-
Cheers Chris much appreciated!! :lol oh and the footpeg hangers front and rear have been painted and polished... :rollin waiting to get the bike back together before I put any more piccys up!! 8)
-
No worries mate, like I said, give me a shout and I'll let you know if your in time for the group buy or if I can get you a good discount from sfs. I'm ordering a few extra kits to make up the numbers so if i've not heard from you in time i'll make sure and get an extra one in red so let me know. 8)
The foot pegs and brackets are just so damn fiddly!! Getting there though. mine is still sitting with its wheels off looking sorry for itself, it'll be back together soon though! Just a pain not having my own garage so keep it at my dads which is about 10 miles away.

Seriously contemplating on doing this as well. Looks stunning! :thumbup
But as Chris said, I too would be too much of a perfectionist and with the weather up here in Finland, I'd drive for an hour and polish for two. :\
But maybe... It's not like I have much to do while I wait for the snow to melt anyway. ;)

Sorry to dig up a old thread.
So with your solution what did you do to remove the coating?
Just soak it or use it with sand paper?
Thanks

I know the swingarm looks great but this sounds like a horrendous idea to me.
Caustic soda eats aluminium and produces hydrogen gas.
It also eats your skin and flesh, turning it to soap.
I would strongly recommend not doing this. No offense CharlieDee.

Own up Chris, have you been selling rad pipes as body parts now? :rolleyes

Have you cleaned all that shite off the floor yet?
-
Or just polish it. Unsure. Knowing all you know now, once the arms off how quick could you get the coating off?
Oh and what's the red bit on the chain?
Fizzy its a job that aint for the faint hearted... you need to be extremely careful with the costic soda... brush on the solution and keep applying in 5 minute intervals until the solution starts going black... you will know exactly what I mean when you start.. make sure you do it outside, with a hose on the ready, safety glasses and gloves on. You will be able to see once its down to metal.. the full process of stripping the coating off takes about 1 hour including all the fiddly bits.. trust me this is the easiest way as I started with sand paper(w&d) and after 4 hours and bleeding fingers I realised this was a very bad idea.. but I was committed and had to continue with a different process, that being the costic soda. Then you have the fun of polishing!! If you have any problems PM me.
The red bit on my chain is chain alignment tool.. good piece of kit(when no hugger is on).

my lad did his bike with wire wool (Using 3grades)..dipped in metal polish" ...then buffed it up with a cup brush in cordless drill...he,s even used brillo pads before and got similar results!!

Well CRH I would like to know what 'polish' he used for this procedure... as stripping a hardened anodised metal is not easy with sand paper or wire wool... I know!! :rolleyes hence going down the chemical stripping route :D and trust me, caustic soda was my last chance saloon... Because if that didn't work the swingarm would have had to go for bead/sand blasting.

Just saying mate... I would like to know what the product is... as would many other Foccers that are considering this... using caustic soda is not the most ideal solution and if there is an alternative out there that will not burn you or make you blind then we would all like to know.. so please do educate us. :D
