i have a 1981 dt 175 mx which i bought partly restored, one of the jobs left to do is connect the wiring loom, the wiring is connected to the magneto and the bike runs, engine kill switch works, but when i tryed connecting the battery it blew the fuse :( . i have tried dissconnecting all the looms in the headlight and connecting just the ignition switch that was ok but as soon as i turn on the key the fuse blows. any ideas ? problem with the rectifier or regulator maybe ? what do these do ? sorry if im a bit thick but i have never had to play with electrics before, my fzs 600 never goes wrong :)

Silly idea but does it have the right voltage battery fitted ?
Trace the leads that come from the blown fuse and see where it goes check connections earths etc maybe that the battery to fuse box (or fuse holder) has a problem which is a part not used when running on the magneto.
Hope that helps :o

get yourself a haynes manual, they all have wiring diagrams and will help you trace the fault,is it the origanal loom ?

I used to have one of these in the early 80's, best fun ever. Good luck sorting it?

:agree DX
Many 6v bikes around at that time. Failing that, it could be anything.
I had a similar problem on my sons ER-5 when he got it. Pulled all of the fuses and put them back one at a time till I found out which fuse circuit was causing the main fuse to blow then went around that circuit with a fine tooth comb to work out where the short was.

all sorted, i assumed since the bike was running that the magneto was all ok but the guy i bought it off had wired it wrong and there was a black negative connected to a 6v feed, anyway i have started from scratch now and fuse problem seems ok, i just have to connect everything else now and hope all is ok, thanks guys anyway.
