Title: engine paint

hi people happy new year all    right i have a notion of painting the engine of my 01 fzs 600  has any one ever done this and how did they go about it :groan  what is the best type of paint to use and how to apply it (brush or spraying )   any ideas /help will be appreciated  :thumbup   thanks swem

how much of the engine do you need to paint? i did my cylinder head using a brush and granville cylinder black and it came up nicely. it's not a perfect match but its close enough that you can't tell the difference

cheers dude gonna paint whole thing have engine out so might as well   is it a satin black finish i was gonna paint it a semi gloss   thanks for the reply        what happened your engine ? i was told to wash engine with detergent          fockin started to peel the paint hense the full respray  :groan

well i just did the head on mine so i didn't bother with any preparation and it came out fairly well with no peeling. if you're doing the whole engine you should probably give it a sand and then a good clean. i'd say semi gloss is the right stuff like you said but i'd definitely recommend granville paint

I used the above on daughters bike (ER5) and it works a treat, i wire brushed off flakes and gave it a degrease with cheap £ shop stuff then a quick jet wash to clear that off. brushed on and job done.
i did try it on the gen 1 thou as well but its miles away from the colour match

I did my old '6 using Hammerite spray gloss black (smooth)


I did it with engine in situ - good cleandown, get rid of flakey bits, wash, dry, abrade, degreas.....then meticulously mask off all the "non black bits" e.g. the carbs - that took bloody ages...then spray away little at a time - used 2 and a bit cans.


It is not marketed as heat resistant but it is - I've used it on the downpipes in the past too (smell a bit while it bakes on)


It looked mint but I guess some of that is down to how long/ho much care you take doing it

Never used it meself but I seem to remember PJ1 getting the thumbs up a few times on here in the past

yes it stays shiney black - obviously it does lose its lustle with time but not for a long time   (doesn't stay shiney quite so long on the downpipes!)

Search "winter" in Bikes hints n tips. I painted the engine last winter and it still looks great. Have a look, all info there. Good luck  :D

Sperex paint... blue 2 put me on to it and it is great- lasts ages on the pies and engine
