Title: Help! headlight, tail light, & instrument lights not working
Post by: Dylan on 19 December 2012, 04:12:07 pm
Hi there guys
Looking for some advice
Recently mylights  have been a little weird, switching off and on while riding, at least once per ride
But now they wont turn on at all, front back & instruments, hi & low beam.
Fuse by battery is ok, is there a relay i should check & where is it.
Ive put a multitester at a headlight connector and there is nothing.
Anyone has an idea what it could be.
Many thanks
Dylan

Going by the diagram for the later bikes, you haven't got a multi-plug connector adrift by chance?  Have you checked your other (headlight / taillight) fuses? Do your indicators work?

Hi Dylan, and welcome to the forum.
There is a good chance your problem is just down to the switchgear. If you're lucky, squirting a bit of contact cleaner in the light switch and working it on and off for a while will clean the contacts up. If that doesn't do the trick you may have enough corrosion in there to necessitate dismantling it... it's a pain in the arse to get back together afterwards though.
Other possibilities: corroded contacts in the connector box under the tank or a broken wire at some point where the harness flexes as the steering moves. But have a go at the switch first.

Ive found the problem.
The brown connection block under the front of the tank was burnt out.
Not sure what caused that to happen.
Ordered new block

If the connector block has cooked itself it's because of poor contact between a pair of terminals in there. If you're going to re-use them give both halves a good clean and squeeze the female side so it grips the spade firmly, when they're carrying currents in excess of 10 amps an imperfect contact can get very hot.

It was completely cooked, so ive opted to replace the block
