Title: Replacing end can

I'm looking for a reasonably priced replacement for my exhaust silencer.  I've been looking at ebay and found lots, but many of them list as specific to a different type of bike. 


How critical is this?  Provided the inlet sizes are right, surely anything can be used?  (I already have the link pipe).

I wouldn't have thought the can was the issue, more the link pipe.
They're not all the same diameter, as i found out when putting my can on.
