Title: Optimate question

Is it ok to connect an Optimate charger tot he battery terminals while the battery is still connected in the bike?

Absolutely, thats the whole point (well not the whole point, but a lot of the point) of them, and its why they supply the leads with waterproof cover that you leave sticking out at a suitable point, so you don't need to keep taking the seat off etc.

I've got a 12 volt  socket fitted on the fairing and connected straight to the battery via a fuse to plug charger in without having to access the battery, makes life a lot easier.

Always be careful when connecting to a battery, if its a charger make sure its turned off when you connect it and when you disconnect it, if you're using a spare to jump it off connect the earth lead last to a point 18 inches away from the battery and remove this first after starting.  A mate was jump starting a car and did it battery to battery, blew the battery up on his range rover, luckly  he was next to a tap so washed him self down, but his clothes weren't so lucky.
