Title: Let the Winter Maintenance Commence
Post by: bigbluebear on 12 November 2012, 12:40:57 pm
Its that time of year again when the bike gets its winter servicing, some performance add ons and cleaned up and put away until the spring (need to get a winter hack). With the bike shops getting a bit short of work this time of year its time to get some good prices.
Nitron NTR Sport Shock ordered.....hoping to see a vast improvement in handling
Booked in for Valve Clearance and Full Service.....24k on the clock now, taking no chances
Wheels getting powder coated gloss black and possibly the side radiator guards......fed up with the polished rims and hours of autosol

This year I have already had three new tyres, been ivanised, new chain and sprockets (front sprocket down a tooth), new air filter and new battery.....if the missus found out how much I spend she may want a wee service too  :lol

Just recently did my own 24000 mile valve check-all within spec. Only cost was replacement cover gasket-less than a fiver-saved about £300 notes that dealer wanted. which has just paid for service,12 months VED & first MOT on cage ! Did suffer a bit of back ache & I took my time but it was a chance to check rad, hoses & jubilee clips & clean up front face of engine.
Next up is swing arm & rear suspension joint bearings-clean inspect for wear & regrease. Saving up for R6 rear shock conversion as mine is 11 years old & bike "squats" under acceleration.
Mine is on SORN from 1st Dec til next March as Im an old wimp who doesnt do cold/wet anymore! so I shall be Mr Cage for the duration-still have the "Think Bike" sticker on base of rearwindow & still tend to "Nod" to other riders-msut think Im a strange one! :rolleyes

Perhaps, rather foolishly, I have never had my valve clearences checked and I am on 65,000 miles. Seems to run fine. Is this something I should have done? I service the bike myself but would not have an idea about valve clearances so it would need to go to a dealer.

A friend of mine got divorced afew years ago and she got to keep everything, include 'his' toys. She sold them all as a job lot for for what he had told her they cost, minus old age, depreciation and wear and tear. She didn't know she was selling them to a mate of his!
