Title: What's the best biking bargain you've ever had?
Post by: fazernigel on 09 November 2012, 04:33:12 pm
Hi Everone

With the NEC show coming up i wonder what is the best bargain you've ever had at the show or anywhere to do with bikes?

Five years ago i bought a waterproof textile jacket from the Truimph stand at the NEC for £25 which has served me summer and winter since and is still waterproof and looking like new. Absolute bargain and top quality.

Has anybody else picked up a Biking bargain?

On christmas day about ten years ago I bought a little Honda VRX 400 - this one:
I paid £1000 for it with 6000 miles, kept it for 18 months and 24000 miles and sold it for £1100. Free biking for 18 months - my best bargain by miles

got a pair of akito gloves for 15 quid from a local bike shop. i wore them nearly everyday for 3 years until the fingers wore out. they were warm and they'd hold out the rain for a good hour before soaking through. they were great.

My ex was given a Suzuki GN125 that had been stood for a few years & had done 13K miles. I did a few bits to it, came up like new, she couldn't get used to having a bike with gears/clutch so I sold it on ebay for nearly 800 quid!

£5 for an unused Akito jacket  :thumbup

My 125 was £200 for a 10 plater... was a bargain til it blew up 600 miles later  :wall   Although on the plus side I sold it for £100, it saved me £100+ for a train ticket for the week and I got a week of practice for my mod 2 so it worked out quite well.

 :)   Hi Guys,

I've picked up a few real 'goodies' over the years .. but thinking about it now I recon my best ever bit of Bike related kit was a £4.99 Pin Drill from a modelling shop.

This tiny tool went on the bring so much pleasure to so many people .. it's all quite amazing!  :eek

You see .. my Gen 1 was the very first bike that Mike GTX (Falcon 269) Ivanised .. after he had done his own.

I got the little pin drill jobby in preparation .. it's the jobby that he drills out those small holes with .. after the job was done I gave Mike the tool (and a bacon butty as we do)

It's the very same tool that he still uses today .. several years and many hundreds of very happy bikers with big 'Grin Factor' faces later.

Bloody good value for money is that .. I recon  :D

Stay Safe Now Y'all  ;)    Trev    ( the Polar Bear, Spain)

I picked up a Yamaha 535 Virago in exchange for a bottle of whisky. The collector box was completely eroded, had been in storage for over 3 years so no MOT or TAX or even been turned over in all that time. The collector box was cut out and a  B&Q shovel was welded on to close the gap (I kid you not), new plugs oil filter and got it MOT'd, all for £40. I cleaned the bike up and swapped it plus £300 for a Fazer 600. I sold the Fazer 600 for £1500 and bought the Fazer thou which I still have and have done a few modifications.....pictures below

My leatherman multitool has helped me out countless times. Saw it on a stall at a car boot sale 14 years ago, asked how much and the guy said £2.50!!!  Honestly say it has been on my belt every single day since. It has been replaced twice free of charge under their no quibble warranty and upgraded once. Cant imagine life without it by my side as I use it hundreds of times a day at work as well.

£4200 on a Fazer 6 in November 2000.  Probably worth £750 now, more if I broke it and sold the parts.

£288 per year / 5 p per mile depreciation.  A bargain I reckon.  No plans to get rid of it so the costs should keep falling!  Will it make 20 years old I wonder?

Bout 12 yr ago my boss was rentin me a super4 for 80 shekels pw. Took it out 1 day after a service and rode over a pothole and the tank ruptured pissin out fuel over the engine.  I took it back and told em i'm gonna rent from a different company and the owner told me he had carbed fzs boxeye 22k near mint condition for £2500. He had £300 deposit from me boss and wanted £500. I gave him £200 and my boss not knowing paid £2000 @ £80 pw. When it was paid i gave the hire shop £300 and ended up payin £500 for it. RESULT :-)

Does this forum count? It's free and I have learned so much and saved myself a fortune by doing work myself instead of having to pay someone else to do it.

Won on EB few weeks ago..complete frame (in gold) with documents and valid MOT for 27.50 EUR. Swingarm, airbox and few racing bits  such as modded airbox cover, passenger R1 footpegs, swingarm spools, original crash protectors, were also included...sweet deal. Good start for new project:o)) Akrapovic 60mm exhaust downpipes for 100 GBP were on top of that (mentioned previously).
