Title: Aaaaargh....HELP!
Post by: Bracechenko on 12 October 2011, 01:22:15 pm
I've locked my key under the seat of my FZS600 this morning and it's my only one!!  :eek What a disaster! I was all ready to leave for work and realised what I had done.

No doubt some of you wise old folk have done something similar, any suggestions before I start drilling out locks?

never done that. and why don't you have a spare or two secreted somethere in the house/garage?
I have my keys attached to one of those yellow coiled cables that you get for disc lock reminders which I've attached to the zip on my jacket pocket. only take the key off to put in the ignition.

which part of the seat is it under? front or back? could you use a narrow/flat screwdriver to try and open the lock?

I don't think the bike came with a spare key when I bought if a few years back?? I'm going to turn the flat upside down to look for it in case it did come with one (just can't remember if it did or didn't now!).

Hodge, good advice ya git!  :wall

Rather than break the lock can you get the undertray off? I've never looked at taking it off so don't know if you can access the screws with the seat on. You could cut a hole in the undertray then replace or repair it an that way you'd still only need one key for you bike. You might even be able to get away with doing a straight cut and bending the plastic down and (temporarily) repair it with ductape.

can you unbolt the seat lock to access the cable, that should be the easiest way to get the seat off?

If you can get the ignition barrel off the top yoke, it MAY have the key number stamped at the base.
I recall getting keys cut many many years ago that way, it may not be the same though nowadays.
Phone a breaker first to ask if he'd have a check for you on a similar ignition barrell, save stripping your ignition barrel uneccessarily.
Best of luck

Cool, thanks for the tips guys. Just got home now and had a look in the dark and I reckon that with a bit of daylight, time and patience i'll be able to pry the seat up enough to get my hand in the gap to fish about for the key.

If not, i'll see what I can do with the undertray.

Cheers

If you take the infills under the seat off you might be able to get at the catch holding the seat down or get at the cable like solorider suggested.

i done it once. Heres what you do

brute fucking ignorance and elbow grease and just pull the seat off. No joke

The lug at the back of the saddle is the offender and its under sub frame. The plastic base of the saddle will bend (and return to shape after) to let the lug pop out from under the subframe. The lock and catch at the front will still be locked but you will have enough at the back to get under and retrieve the key. Its a bastard but if you get the rage it'll be done in seconds. The lug will be a slightly different level after, but it just means it will be a more snug fit when you put the seat back on

DONE!!!!!

Is it done yet, I don't mind charging you a fortune to drive to Wales and back :)

Without having a FZS600 in front of me to look at I'm no help I'm afraid.

Prehaps a friendly local foccer can call by and you can look under his seat to seek a less strenuous method than Rays?

Side panels off and a straight ruler - you can unlatch it this way with a bit of fiddling

You know what, I started pulling the seat last night and could see that that's a possibility so will be giving it some welly tonight. The magnet idea would be great but typically i've stuffed a bike cover under there so there's no room to fish around in.
