Title: any-one got a small number plate ?
Post by: phillywilly on 09 October 2012, 09:24:37 pm
just been looking on gumtree at a ninja 600 and the number plate is tiny, like all the 7 letters/numbers on it are all in the same line ,but it DOES suit the look of the bike .
i know im in for a bloody good flaming now ,where all of you tell me you need a standard size one for the police number recognition camera to pick up proper size letters on plate ,blah , blah , but has anyone here got a small one  :lol :lol  and if so ...ever had any trouble with the rozzers ?
right , let the flaming begin  :b

I've just bought a new regular size for my other bike so it passes MOT. I don't see the fuss with having to have a small one. If anything I think it looks daft cos it looks so alien

iirc, the fine for a small number plate where the letters are all on one line is ~£1000 (plus additional points on the license)

I had one once, got pulled within a week, £30 fine, the wife called me a silly fucker. Haven't bothered with one since  :\

a mate had 1 like you've described, lost count of the fines he got, he replaced it with one just a bit smaller than standard I've one the same, not been pulled (yet) and the cameras can read it, as I found out the other month, I think thats all the police are bothered about, Its in case its stolen they can find it, oh yes I believe that one.

I've had 2 small plates on my last 2 FireBlades. The first one was on 2 lines with the letters slightly spaced and measuring about an inch high. I also had a small slogan on the bottom saying "Life begins at 140" Plod informed me Prison is at 140, funny bugger. £20 fine.
The second was just on 1 line in the classic letterbox style which so suited my 929. £60 fine. No points as it's a criminal offence and not a traffic offence. Nice Police man said they have to be big just in case i rob a bank, they can't see small plates. How we laughed when i said i use the my other bike to rob banks and it hasn't got a plate.
My Fazer has standard plate and looks ok with it.

the rozzers have got a sense of humour then (sometimes )

i wouldn,t put small plates on any bike - not worth the hassle and like you i think the fazer suits normal plate ,....but the photo of this ninga 600 with the small letterbox style plate really did look good, but so does a diamond tiara but i wouldnt have one of those either  :D

A lot of plates from supply places are actually oversize so you can get one a bit smaller than most and still be legal.

I had to cut the corners on mine to get it to fit with my rack but never had any issues (it is not noticeable and can be read by bus lane cameras).

That's worse then having a small one!

I think the standard ones are 9" x 7". I have 7" x 5" on my Fazer & FZ750. Looks good, not taking the pi55 too much. Never been pulled for it but then I haven't been stopped at all in the last 5-6 years on any of my bikes. Luck?

Legality aside, that looks cool! Cheaper option is a second plate with some Velcro to cover your real one when you wish to speed. If you're happy to be naughty, at least be REALLY naughty!

I replaced the plate on my thou with a smaller one albeit in the same style as a regular plate - just smaller in all dimensions and smaller characters.

Never had a problem being pulled by plod or with MOT. Just a matter of degree Ireckon.

Had a smaller plate on the 1000 for allmost 5 years now. Been pulled a fair bit but the plate has never been brought up.
It's still the 2 line shape and is only about an inch or so under size. But has grafix on both edges and foc u address on the bottom.

i'm enjoying reading this thread.
I used to live in Derbyshire & often visit Matlock on a weekend. the police had a feild day doing people with illeagal plates.

I was never tempted as I had an F650 at the time & it looked ok with normal plates

a few of my colleagues have "show plates" on their cages and have had them failed at MOT for not having the correct BS number plates on.
both mine & my mrs have leagal plates but with a Kernow sticker on the edge both passed MOT's ( however was done in deepest Cornwall by a Cornish man!!

This is the plate on my old 929 FireBlade. i got followed for 4 miles with a young plod using Blues and two's, i honestly didn't think he was after me but could see the lights a few hundred yards back with loads of other  cars between us. I just kept a steady speed in a 40, not doing anything naughty just progressive, he was being held up by everyone. When he finally stopped me i took my helmet off and he saw my ear plugs and said that was why i couldn't hear him. Phew!!! Anyway i digress, i think it was quite a tidy rear end. i've never done motocross on it it just looks like it?

i think that number plate looks far better than the standard one , but couldnt stand all the pulls,
where do you go to get one made ? surely all number plate makers have just standard sizes ?

My Fazer has a standard 9x7" plate, most of my previous ones I have replaced for an 8x6" or 7x5" which don't really take the pi55 too much.

Not got around to it on this yet, they are quite big bikes and I don;t think the standard size looks so out of place as it does on previous R1s, FireBlades etc.

That said I will probably go and look for one now  :D

Just Googled road legal plates & found this:

All motorcycles and tricycles must display a number plate at the rear of the vehicle. Motorcycles and tricycles registered before 1st September 2001 may display a number plate at the front of the vehicle but are not required to.
If you have a two or three wheeled motorcycle or tricycle that has a body type of a four-wheeled vehicle, you MUST display a number plate at the front and back of the vehicle.
Motorcycles registered on or after 1st September 2001 must display a two-line number plate. Motorcycles registered before 1st September 2001 may display a three-line number plate.
One-line number plates are illegal, regardless of the date of registration.
Here are the character sizes:

Character Height[/t][/t][/t]
64 mm
Character Width (except the figure 1 or letter I) 44 mm
Character stroke 10 mm
Space between characters 10 mm
Space between groups 30 mm
Top, bottom, and side margins (minimum) 11 mm
Space between vertical lines 13 mm
so i suppose you can work out that a box standard plate AB 12 ABC would have to be 9" x 5"

I bought mine from a bike show, the seller did explain it was show only and not road legal.

If I remember rightly a shop in Hull called Steve's spares does them but I think they are advertised as show plates and it was a while ago when I was in there last.

Ha ha, I'm very jealous, I wish I had the time and money and balls to get myself across the Channel and do some serious riding, I shamefully live 10 minutes from Dover and the port and about 15 from the Tunnel.

A friend has previously done the touring thing with his family, Mum, brothers and a mate, all of them on Fazers, saw the pics recently, he's getting another bike in May, so I think we will be getting some trip or other sorted next year.  :)
