Title: owners of high mileage bikes..
Post by: ogri48 on 09 October 2012, 08:55:06 pm
is that luvverly motah still strong with plenty of miles onnit?
mines done 46k (just run in? ;) ) and still feels sweet as nut, i know blade motors from the same era wear incredibly well, wondering if the detuned r1 lumps we have fare as well over time and miles?

My most recent is 60k old and I only changed the plugs for the first time last weekend. Seems abusive but the originals were still perfectly serviceable and I've felt absolutely no difference to the running since changing them.

I also had a chance to examine a 199,000 mile despatch riders bike after he split the cases. It was like new inside. Perfect mirror smooth bearing surfaces, cams and crank journals, bores, the lot. He only took it apart to show his young lad how to do it.

The one thing I'd watch out for is second gear getting jumpy. I had one strip the teeth but it was like that from when I bought it, and it was either like that from new or the previous owner was a wheelie merchant.

Second gear probs were a problem for yamaha for years. Certainly xs1100s were very weak in that department. Nearly cured by the time fazer engines were produced but not quite. Wise not to abuse first to second changes.

Mine's 10 year old, done 48k, runs sweat. Done a lot of upgrades - Full Monty, upgraded Shock & Forks, Brakes + quite a few cosmetic improvements. A definite keeper... ;-)
