Title: NO DRIVE
Post by: Jimmygixxer on 08 September 2012, 08:35:12 pm
Changed the bars today to a set of renthals, went to go for a test run but the bike wont move. :eek
I goes into gear no problem, but when i release the clutch lever nothing.
When on the centrestand in 1st gear it will move the wheel slowly.
The cable play at the lever is spot on as i adjusted it at the sprocket cover a few weeks back because there was no adjustment left at the lever from previous owner.
I did notice that when i put my finger on the clutch plates i can get a small bit of movement from them which didn't seem right, so i stripped the clutch.
There doesn't seem to be much material left on the friction plates but they aren't bald and the last time i was out on the bike it ran 100% with no clutch slip at all which is strange and it never has before, and the steel plates seem to be in good order?
I also noticed when i looked through the oil fill hole when the bike was in gear and running, that the hole clutch assembly would rotate as it should, but with a bit of back brake the center part would stop and the engine would comfortably still rotate the outer part.
So i assume its the clutch, any ideas and what parts should i get?

when did you last ride the bike with old bars? was everything fine? if so then the only thing you`ve changed / possibly altered in theory is the cable and not the clutch assembly itself. i would be looking at the difference in cable freeplay first of all and if its too tight ( bear in mind the renthals are bound to be wider, hence longer. its a bit like taking a `non-running ` engine apart only to find the fuel tanks empty! have a sit and think first mate.........backtrack....carefully. good luck ;)

cable is too tight. take it off, start again. make sure nothings happened to the clutch side of the cable. if the clutch was fine before the swap, then it should still be ok.

Thanks all.
I was thinking what the hell have i done, and the bars are slightly longer, but the cable still has plenty of free play and the biting point on the lever is still the same with still some slack? :(

Happy days, found the problem  :D
The cable adjustment at the sprocket cover was too tight, so the push rod wasn't allowing the clutch to fully engage as it was not returning far enough back for the clutch plates to make a strong contact.
It's always the simple things  :o
Cheers all.
