The "x percent brighter" bulbs from Philips or Osram are quite good. I put a pair in the car and they are noticably brighter, chap next door with identical car  even said.

"Have you got HIDs in this"   :rollin

Downside is that they only last 300 hours (as against 1000 hours for a standard H1) and if you buy the very bright ones they will degrade your headlamp plastic cover (but my standard H1 did that anyway!) . Apparently they emit more ultra-violet than ordinary ones.
Having said that, headlight plastic in the year 2000 wasn't very good - just look at any W reg Ford Focus.

Buy branded ones ... there are a lot of well marketed chinese copies out there which are simply ordinary H1s/H4s painted blue.

On my 2000 FZS I did a complex re-wire with relay so that both lights are proper main-beams, but you don't want to go there .  :eek

I've got a 2002 "foxeye" with both lights taking the H4 60/55W bulbs. Cans I use any H4 bulbs, particularly the "up to 90% brighter" bulbs, or are there some to avoid?

In a word ... Yes!

But you take your own risk , you should be aware that most of what's written about them is either "Marketing Speak" or "Paid Placements" from vested interests
(ie its mostly Bollox!). The truth is that they are simply H4s with better material control and a slightly more 'inert' gas filling that allows them to be driven harder.

I used "Osram Nightbreaker" H1s in the car and so far they are fine (2 years old).
They claim "All Osram Night Breaker bulbs are UV Protected and so are suitable for use on vehicles with plastic headlight lenses" .
They also claim that their new ones "Nightbreaker plus" have 50% more lifetime than the originals.

There are Philips equivalents but I would avoid other makes unless you can see evidence that they work as well.

Thanks, I'll stick to Phillips or Osram.

How do you fit that HID H1 bulb?!
Got it, put the "balast", but can't figure a way to put the bulb and hohd it in place. Should I glue it or something? :(

Slaninar - the H1 bulb holder should hold it in but mine didn't either. In the end I used a pared down split wooden clothes peg to brace the holder between the clip and the holder.

My Fazer already had both headlights wired when I bought her so they're both on and it does look 100% better.
I bought some so called "uprated bulbs" and they were just dipped in some blue dye stuff? That's e.bay for you. :(

H7 HID is the answer. It has a plastic "collar" that can be easily cut to fit just right in the Fazer's H1 original spot. The metal clip holds it in place. Will see about the brightness tonight, but even in daylight it looks a lot brighter than the H4 on hi beam. Should be nice.

So anyone looking for easy fit HID for FZS - go for H7 in place of H1 bulb - it works. Or hold on for a few more months to see how mine holds. :)

Has anyone had a go with LEDs?

LEDs are good if lights have good optics (made for LED). Otherwise - not good. I have LEDs on rear and brake lights, but everything else is just not good. Tried it all - less visible and less light for me to see.

He did say "cheapest, best" ... so I guess a HID kit is the one.

If he'd said "cheapest, easiest" it would be upgraded bulbs.

Anyhow, I'm pissed off with being blinded at night so I've ordered one of  these for 22 of your Earth currency units..

Just spent most of the day trying to do the headlight upgrade and after routing cables, soldering and generally making a fool of myself I've somehow managed to get it working ish - the offside lamp now comes on for dipped beam but the nearside one won't turn in at all. Someone help, it makes no sense and I'm sure the bulb still works  :'(

Edit: Ok turns out I was possibly being crazy, its all working now (properly) thank god  :D

One other fix you can do is replace the feed to the headlights with better cable. If you bike is anything like mine, then the original wire is thin and shows signs of overheating.

Take the feed (via an inline fuse) direct from the battery to a relay by the light, use the original feed to activate the relay.

Folks ... "It came ... it finally came" (to quite "Sid" in Toy Story 1) 28 days from Hong Kong.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6000K-HID-H4-3-Ballast-Motorcycle-Yamaha-PW-TW-C164-/170664547078?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D1%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D3932819787664413200 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6000K-HID-H4-3-Ballast-Motorcycle-Yamaha-PW-TW-C164-/170664547078?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D1%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D3932819787664413200)

But it came with no instructions, not even in Chinese!

Question is ... It has an orange shroud over the HID assembly ... Am I supposed to remove that??

It looks suspiciously permanent.

Cheers

Hard to tell without a pic, but I'd guess is it's just a cover to stop sweaty fingerprints getting on the quartz envelope... in which case it should be removed before installation.

You're right ... I figured it out while trying to assemble the thing into its H4 flange thing.

This is it ... (The shroud on mine is orange - hence the confusion, I thought it was some colour correction thing).

One other 'problem' ... The Quartz envelope is very wobbly on its mounting - so I took the base apart to see why and its SPRING MOUNTED. So it looks like its supposed to wobble. Is that normal ?? (I mean there's a spring mount hidden INSIDE the silver cylinder, not the spring in the pic.

Or have I just got a dose of that legendary Chinese Quality...  :eek ?

My fazer is fitted with headlight conversion done by garage, if I can work out how to scan to computer I have full instructions with step by step guide, wiring diagram and what parts you require.

I've finally figured this Chinese thing out (arrived in the post after 28 days waiting)

Its an H4 HID - so it has 2 'HID capsules' but only 1 "Ballast".

The Capsules are mounted on a solenoid that waggles them up and down depending on whether you are on dip or main beam.

Apparently that makes it a "Bi- Xenon" ... :rollin

Cool, and all for 20 quid.

When I've finished the new "engineered Oak" floor in the hall I'll let you know how I get on.

OK as an additional light but as a main source of illumination they are highly illegal, LEDS provide a very clean source of light but the light has very little "spread" so they would be a very concentrated beam.

I want to do that but always wondered if it was legal...and does it matter on MOT's...

Yes its legal and if it worris the MOT inspector that much and the conversion is done properly just pull the fuse on the link wire come MOT time.

As far as leds are concerned they are far too directional for a main light and not that great for a side light for the same reason, the spectrum is also too restricted to give a good view as lots of colours will just not reflect the light, the same as low pressure sodium streetlights make everything yellow, brown, or invisible, if you're not mugged by a well tanned chinaman forget the ID parade being useful.

 :agree
The real reason that LEDs aren't installed as main light source in mainstream automobiles is that they have problems at the low and high ends off their temperature range.
At -40C they are too bright - now that could be controlled but it would be expensive.
At +125C it is impossible to drive them hard enough to generate enough light without them getting too hot. That could be solved with a refrigerator - again expensive.
So they are 'uncertifiable' for Automotive 'main light' applications.

They did however issue a 'special dispensation' for the Audi R8.

Frankly in the UK you could use them but just don't expect them to work on a hot day in Arizona during a total Eclipse. :D

I can confirm that the above £22 Chinese wonder HID works fine , even if it does take 30 days to arrive.

Its just 1 HID capsule and it waggles up and down on a solenoid rocker for dip/main-beam.

Wires direct to the battery with its own fuse, you route the cable harness under the tank, attach the dip and main beam input cables to the green and yellow wires in the box under the tank (I soldered them in cos I hate screw connectors). Tuck the ballast behind the screen next to the rev-counter secured to the right fairing bracket with a cable-tie. Second cable tie round the right hand fairing shelf panel to hold the control box and hold the wiring out of the way of the forks.

No other problems (except one of the connectors can be 'reverse inserted' so its not quite idiot-proof  :o ).

HIDs are lower power than the standard bulbs. 35Watt HID vs 55/60Watt Halogen H4 or H1.
They just emit more light and less heat!
