Title: Fitted "Sports" HotGrips today...
Post by: MadDogMcQ on 12 August 2012, 08:37:29 pm
Finally got around to fitting the "Sports" version of Oxford's Hotgrips today. They call them "Sports" basically because the profile of the grips is quite low as opposed to the relatively chunky regular ones.

Nice digital switchgear and nice and toasty for the coming Autumn and Winter  :lol .  Very simple to install. I placed the controller in a void in front of the battery so as not to lose any underseat space.

Careful, I placed mine in that really handy void, it turned out to be the air intake... Didn't affect mine at all, but Mike told me off when he fitted Mr Ivans wonderful kit!

Have heard stories of it revving out lower than it should and generally being strangled :\

Stupid Yamaha making it so inviting...

Looks a really good setup though, I've got the 'normal' ones and they work brilliantly :)

Hope that switch gear lasts longer than the older controllers!

I'd check that void Tom just in case as I think it is the intake chamber.

Incidentally, I read on another forum about a bloke that fitted slim fit elements (the type used on snowmobiles) underneath some of those 'grip puppies' that are sold on ebay. Result warmth and comfort in all seasons.

GIve us a picture of where you wired it in to!

Do you think, as the sports grips are thinner that the normal grips, they will heat up quicker?

As you can see from the photo, the air-intake itself is totally clear. The photo below it shows the same view from a different angle, so you can see where the controller is stored. Honestly, I just cannot see how this could impact the air intake, and a road test tonight confirms that it hasn't made a blind bit of difference to the power at any level.

According to the manufacturer, the grips can be connected directly to the battery, but I put it through an ignition source via a relay, just in case  :D .  The "Sports" tag just relates to the fact that the grips are slimmer and a tad better looking than the more utilitarian version, but both heat up equally quick.

I know what you're saying about the Grip Puppies Pete, but I think they look a bit tacky, can introduce hand-fatigue because they are bulky and don't look very resilient. And then of course you've got the separate heating elements in there. All seems a bit "Heath Robinson".

Just ordered mine, did you buy the relay or find one under the seat?

Cheers,

I bought the relay JZS - there's a photo of it above, just behind the seat rubber.

Hot grips Pt 2, (what the book doesn't tell you)

Try not to glue your fairing together with the drops of superglue that are pushed out when you glue the grips on   :lol

You could pick up a switched live from the fuse box without the need to use a relay.

Follow the write up from pointer2null, and scroll down the page for my photos on how to access the spare tags in the fuse box.
