Title: Help! My Fazer wants to be a triple
Post by: Ben600 on 06 July 2012, 11:21:12 pm
Hi all, good evening.
My Fzs600 seems to want to be a triple cylinder bike lately...
With the recent torrential rain, and the use of the Fazer in such conditions, I have been experiencing a strange issue , whereby my bike drops a cylinder, and won't rev past 8k. When it does it I grab the clutch and rev the nuts off it, and it'll be find for about two mins. In the dry the bike is fine, it only has this issue when conditions are wet and the bike is wet...
Any ideas on where to look or what to do?
Thanks for your time,
Ben

My guess is an ignition circuit fault on the HT side. If you can replicate the fault for testing purposes, you can try (carefully!) touching the downpipes (the missing cylinder will be cooler).

Not familiar with the ignition set up on the FZS bikes, if there's four coils (one per cylinder)  check the connections (inc the low tension {LT} wires to that coil, if its a 2-coil system, one of your HT leads is probably damp and leaking to earth instead of going to your spark plug.

Also worth checking the state of your spark plugs for tell-tale signs of the state of your motor.

I had a similar problem with mine but it was below 3000 rpm! It was suggested i changed the spark plug caps, which i have done & its now running really sweet  :D

The plug caps that were suggested are NGK SD05F about £15 for 4!

Hope this helps Ben

hi ben600......caps and plugs.....you have two coils on the fazer one feeding cyl 1+4 and the other feeding 2+3....if your running on 3 it must be the cap or plug, even more so if it only happens in the wet.....could be the ht lead but very unlikley....best to replace all four but as already said you can identify which cylinder by carefully touching the downpipes  ;) .....let us know how you get on  :)

Lift tank off and try trimming the ht lead at the cap end of the dodgy cylinder (only 3or 4 mm needs to be trimmed) you could do all to save you doing it again then replace the cap tightly and spry inside with wd40, put it back on the plug firmly.  it wont be the plug as it only happening in wet suggests its the lead or cap getting wet, also coat all the coil and caps with wd40 when trimmed and dry
bet it dont happen again :)

it's all good now! normal, 4 cylinder service has been resumed :)
I chopped a few mm off the end of the leads, and refitted the caps, and doused it all in silicone spray. Sorted!
Thanks guys!
