Title: help please - suspension, surging & idle speed
Post by: Enceladus on 31 May 2012, 08:03:09 pm
got a few niggles with my bike that i want toget sorted out asap if i can, but never really been mechanically trained (or watched anyone who is) i'm not really sure where to start !
ok, first off......
my front suspension is rock hard !
how can i soften it up a bit please ?
the back was on the hardest setting and i have dropped that 3 notches and is much better.
when i am cruising (at any speed) and i am holding the throttle steady, the bike feels like it is wanting to surge forwards.
no big issue, but gets annoying after a while.
any way i can fix this ?
and lastly, my bike seems to idle at rather too low revs (stalled twice yesterday :eek )
can i increase the idle speed up from the 1k (approx) at the moment to something like 1.5-2k ?
thanks for your help  :D

Wouldnt say idle speed @ 1k was an issue...  :rolleyes

What model is it? the later foxeye model you could adjust the preload, also have you checked your tyre pressures? If your a small chap look at dropping the front to 32 (if its higher, mines 36)

And the surge? itsn't that good throttle response  :b

I assume your fork doesn't have preload adjusters. Probably there are extra preload spacers inside. It could be that the springs have been changed for stiffer ones.
The idle should be at 1200rpm.
Have you downloaded the manuals? http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?action=downloads (http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php?action=downloads)

have a look at the throttle cables...they should have a little bit of slack at the bars,if there two tight just a slight movement on the throtle might be causing the surge  ;)

thanks :)
downloaded the manual but not had the time to read it as yet.
seem to be stuck in a work, eat, sleep routine at the moment  :(
as soon as i get chance i'll have a look at the throttle cable
my bike is a 2001 (Y plate) and as it has only done 7k miles i would doubt that the springs have been replaced, but you never know ;)

re: hard forks......have you checked oil level? if too high and not enough `air room`, forks can basically hydrolock. check manual for specs and check. this oil level is as crucial as engine oil. ;)

There a wee knob down by the LH side plate that adjusts the idle speed.

I've got mine at around 1250 and it works well.

Just to chip in, my idle has always been pretty much smack on 1,000 RPM and ive never had any issues with it being too low. If you stalled, just give it some more revs and a little less immediate clutch ;)
