Contract is up later this month so am thinking of upgrading to a smart phone, which may cause confusion as I have been using a Nokia 6230i for the last 6 or so years :lol
So, which one to go for? Once I have a good idea of phones then it's search the best tariff time. Currently with o2.
Are they all much of a muchnesss, or are iPhones the one to have?
-
You want to skip the phones Tim and go straight for a jack plug in the back of your skull - make sure it's wi-fi enabled :pokefun
-
I've got a Galaxy S2. Google maps navigation's brilliant and still works when it's inside your jacket. Works nicely with bluetooth systems, too.
-
I'd avoid Blackberry's if I were you. If you leave them on a received text in your pocket they have a habit of texting back to the originator random pictures from your phone. In this case 14 instances of a picture of my wife just after she had stuffed a cream cake in her gob and had cream on her nose and round her chops.
It didn't help the that receiving textee was female.
Since this only happened this morning I will have to update you later on the repercussions :)
-
Avoid bb like the plague. Galaxy s3 is out soon. iphone 4s is the way to go :)
-
Galaxy S3 looks fabby. Apple is nice but overpriced. Very happy with my Android HTC Desire.
-
Don't buy apple products.
Just don't do it.
-
iphone 4s is the way to go :)
No it ain't
-
Can't comment on the phones but I would not recommend "3" as a service provider. They are THE most infuriating mobile phone company I have ever had the misfortune of using. :wall Never had any problems with o2 for what it's worth.
-
For me it comes down to either Android based or Iphone based.
i wouldnt use windows or blackberry myself
I love my Android Desier S
But my daughter didnt like her Desire HD as it chewed batterys in 8 hrs (2 if you were running satnav)
When i first went from my old phone to a smart phone the only thing i didnt like is battery useage. i was used to my phone lasting 3-4 days and mine now i get 24 hrs if lucky.
partly down to i use it SO much more though as im on it more than my laptop.
I have a few friends with Iphone and it looks ok. but for me its more a brand fashion thing that made most go for it.
I love Android and if/when i replace mine i will replace with another android bassed phone.
-
way I look at it the BB is a tool and to get the most out of it you need to know how to use it to its full capacity
the iphone is a toy ! with limited capability but its very very user friendly
my contract is up soon I have the iphone at the moment Just a 4 but i've all the others
I was looking at the note ! a big phone with a big screen
-
Why do you need a smart phone when you have had old school phone for 6 years...
-
Got a crackin deal from Tesco's, give them a try.

Good question. Just moving with the times I guess. :woot
-
I were the first person in my work to get the Samsung s2, now there's 20 there. Only get what you will need not what you want. I now only use mine as a phone since Vodaphone gave me a Samsung tablet 10.1 for free. :lol
-
Tim, check with your service provider, see what they'll offer as an upgrade. And get them to run the analysis slide rule over your usage over the last year or so, and ask for a more appropriate tariff.
I did this at the end of March and T-Mobile moved me from bills of about £80-£90 a month to about £20 odd, including a vastly bigger data allowance, about 600 free texts and free calls. And they threw in a new Galaxy S2 for free.
I must admit though, as a relatively old foccer, using the phone has me bamboozled but being able to watch vids in full HD (I think) colour on my phone is amazing.
Mrs Diesel has worked for mobile service providers for 15 years or so and currently works for Tesco Mobile so I'll ask her what's hot and what's not when she gets home.

i phone all the way mate the only people who dont rate them are those who dont have one :rolleyes iv never met anyone who has one who doesent think its the dogs danglys (i think a lot of it is the anti apple brigade)
-
I have an iclone (Motorola Atrix) which is great but if the iphone was the same price I'd have had that - but mine was free and £20 a month for a big minute, text, and data plan for two years. The iphone was money up front and twice the tariff. Its better than mine but not twice as good. Have a look at getting a deal through quidco or similar
-

LOL
I don't have one because of I tunes. I don't like to limited to where my music comes from. But there is more choice for music on I tunes.
-
I have the iPhone 4s. It's ok but I prefer the functionality of an Android. Has the Galaxy S2 before.
You need iTunes to load the music onto the phone but you don't need to buy the music through iTunes.
-
I've had two blackberries. Both broke, two different models. The keypads are flaky at best and one was replaced twice.
Oh, and I knew how they both worked to their fullest capabilities...Mark!!! Tsk!
-
Phone is a personal choice but if you get good service on o2 you may want to concider an unlocked phone and a rolling 1 month contract maybe like these http://giffgaff.com/index/offer (http://giffgaff.com/index/offer)
-

Arrogant customer support (remember when the reception was shite and Apple said you were all holding the phone incorrectly?) Apple also routinely under-spec the phones because they know the sheep will buy a shed load more of the newer versions (what! they do that with iPad too? NOOO!), no scope for external memory expansion, everything has to go through iTunes, picky about the sound/video formats it will play, overpriced.....
Other than that, iPhone all the way
-
Now I've had my iPhone rant I can offer something more constructive and grown up.
You could always consider breaking the shackles of any contract and go pay as you go.
O2 do some cracking tariffs with inclusive data and texts from £10 a month regular top up.
You can then buy a really good sim-free smartphone, new or nearly new from £150.
Dependant on your requirements, this could be a cheaper option. Even if it works out similar to pay monthly over the course of a year, you're free to change anytime because you have no contract.
Remember, most (smartphone) contracts are 24 months now.

I agree iphones just impose unnessesary limitations and expense for a product that should be so much better.
Android is definately the future and as open source and future expandability will seriously give apple a good kicking in the next few years (especially cos of their loss of steve job).
I have just pre ordered the galaxy S3 the specs are spanking :D
cant wait till the end of the month to take delivery
-
I've rooted my Galaxy S2 and I'm running the nightly builds of cyanogen mod. Much nicer experience than either Samsung or HTC skinned android and the battery now lasts two days.
-
plus andriod you can play angry birds for free... Think you have to pay on iphone?
If you're not fussed though, I'd look at O2 simplicity, you just pay a rolling monthly contract for the sim card atn various extras, use your own phone.
http://www.o2.co.uk/tariffs/simplicity (http://www.o2.co.uk/tariffs/simplicity)
Do look at Tesco, they use the same network as O2 (as my little mind understands it) so if you're happy with the signal you get now, Tesco might be cheaper (plus clubcard points - how exciting)

For any Android users who want more battery life, install JuiceDefender - basically it stops all the wifi, email, etc etc when the screen is turned off. I get a few days out of my Desire now, used to be a day if I was lucky. Of course you could always have a spare battery in yer pocket, something not possible on an iPhone ;)
-
my tuppence
i was on PAYG with o2 & Tesco mobules for years swapped to orange pay monthly contract they gave me a basic Nokia that i can use as a phone , it texts and has a camera. i can get fb on it, i dont need apps or anything as if i want a pc/laptop i have one at home / on my desk at work. if it is important ppl can call me if i cant answer it they leave a voicemail,,, simples. cant use all those apps when driving or riding !!
keep it simple!

Theres a coincidence, I did the same thing yesterday. Finally got a smartphone. Got fed up with small text and keypads for my ageing eyes :lol
I plumped for the Sony Experia arc s. Main reason being, I've been with o2 since Jesus was a boy. I'm not a big user and have been on a £10 tariff for ages.
The Sony was only £80 to buy on the same tariff. I've added a £3 data pack to that. OK it's a 24 month contract but I'm not planning going anywhere.
Also it gets good reviews for it's camera and I do take the odd piccie. Not interested in Facebook etc and emailing from it but it's built for them.
Google maps actually works as well :)
Was playing with it all evening and it's a joy to use. I can actually see the text :lol
-
Old maybe but love it. :lol

Tim, I've got an iphone 4s (which makes and receives calls pretty good!!).................but it might be a bit exciting for an accountant :pokefun
-
I'm using Sony Xperia S on O2 for £18.50 a month. Phone was free as an introductory offer. Seemed best deal around at time. I was shopping around for best deal/best phone for about a month before I could upgrade. Found this helpful

i have the iphone 4 got it for christmas i had the nokia E7 b4 this and there is no comparison the nokia had to be charged twice a day from brand new the iphone will last 2 days with the same usage if you do go for an android or the nokia smart phone then make sure you install an app killer as that is what did in my nokia as it dose not shut down the apps in the same way as the iphone with the nokia you have to shut them down manualy.

OMG I can talk to google :eek
For an old boy like me, it was quiet a moment in history when I discovered that yesterday :lol
OK - techie question. Using the phone as a sat-nav, I realise it will use data, but how much do you think it uses, say for an hour's journey with directions??
Just wondering whether to bother getting a mount for the car or not. (got a regular sat-nav but the phone would look at lot cooler :) )
-
My experience, in an hour of android navigation you're not going to use more than 100k. You can get that down to even less if you pre-cache the areas you're going to be in when you're on wifi at home.
-
100k, so is that .1 of a mb?
-
100k, so is that .1 of a mb?
Aye.
That said, there is navfree:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.navfree.android.OSM.ALL (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.navfree.android.OSM.ALL)
You're given the option of downloading the data for given countries. I'm not too certain of the quality of the openstreetmap.org maps, though. Not used them much. I prefer the Google ones.

i have this on my iphone works great you can do a google serch to find your addy and away you go

So don't bother with an iPhone - it'll take up all of your non-upgradeable storage space, whereas if you had a 'droid you could put all the maps on a separate memory card just used for long trips...
-
:agree :lol
iphone just say no!!!
-
i tried the htc sensation but the audio was shite so i sent it back & got the iphone 4 & very happy with it. £20 a month with tesco mobile no other provider could come close to that, also what i really like about the iphone 4 is the facetime on it, its the same as skype but only works iphone to iphone.
-
'its the same as skype but only works iphone to iphone. '
So why not use Skype and be able to call anyone :wall
-
Looks like there's a reason for Alan09's title then :)
So using the sat-nav for a day's journey shouldn't use much more than a meg of data then? (I realise if abroad it's a different story).
-
One issue I found with live downloaded maps is that if you don't have a good data signal and you're zoomed in (i.e. down to street level) the maps don't always keep up with where you are :lol
-
...So using the sat-nav for a day's journey shouldn't use much more than a meg of data then? (I realise if abroad it's a different story).
Data isn't going to be your problem here, it's battery life. I use my galaxy S2 because I'm moving between two places in London I don't know and it's never more than an hour and a half. You're not going to get more than four hours out of a phone on navigation.
Not so bad in a car because charging it's easier, but on a bike you'll struggle.
-
It would only get used in the car and very rarely so I'll get a mount and charger off amazon, loads of cheap ones there!
-

I use my HTC Desire daily as a sat nav and cover around a 1000 miles a week in my lorry. I have a 1GB monthly data allowance and wouldn't come even close to using that using sat nav alone.
Little tip for you. Once you have your route, turn off your mobile data on your phone. This will save unnecessary downloading of data (but it keeps your network signal for calls).
You will only need data on if you decide to stray hugely from the route planned or if you want constant traffic updates.
The phone downloads the map required in "tiles". Even if you make a small error following the route, so long as you don't stray too far, the sat nav will keep up and redirect you.
If you've gone too far the wrong way and off the downloaded map, just turn your data back on and it will donload the required portions for you.
On most Android phones, you can set your home screen to contain a Mobile Data On/Off toggle button to save going through the menus, so it really is very quick.

I resisted the i-phone for years because I didn't want to have the same thing as everyone else - I should've have got one years ago!
Don't listen to them about i-tunes, I download songs using a website to convert videos and then copy it across to my phone,
you can also copy in your own cd's.
The android app market is a pain in the backside to use, especially trying to find and update apps.
The i-phone does everything you need and more, I have had over a dozen mobile phones and this beats all of them put together...
And i-phone 5 is meant to come out in July...
-
Not sure why you find Android Martketplace ('Google Play' now) a pain. My apps update automaticlly too.
-

the real problem with itunes is not actually within its own functionality, its what it does to your PC/ laptop. itunes takes control of all your media files not only in storage but also playback and makes even the best machines run like dogs!!!
i have had to repair more computer issues caused by itunes trying to run windows than anything else!
as for iphone 5...........well that is just an excuse to rip off more devoted/deluded apple heads, the overall functionality will still be less than the latest androids especially the S3 :D
-
I know I'm a virgin smart phone user but I've got an available apps updates notification already!

I realise this won't help the debate but if you're having to justify buying one you probably don't really want/need one.
An advantage of a cheap phone and contract is you can sometimes get free gifts, about a year ago I was due for an upgrade and went for a Nokia 6303 on a contract that gave me a free PS3. Other advantages include simplicity to use, cheap replacement costs, no need for insurance, and less concern about theft and damage (I dropped my phone the other day, it still works and I think it cracked the pavement).
You might even get a shiny new tablet :)
-
Before choosing any phone, you could do worse than check out techradar and gsmarena.com.
Full reviews and functionality tests. Great sites.
I have HTC desire running Android 2.2 I think.
I loved it to begin with and still think its a cracking phone, half gig onboard storage notwithstanding.
After a while the phone started to show gremlin like quirks. Internet suddenly kicking me out, tap a bookmark and takes me a different one, suddenly slowing up. Even right now, typing is a bit of a chore because the memory seems to be held up ajd only one letter at a time comes up, and words takes ages sometimes. To the point that it disengages autocorrect and it both spells the words wrong and adds words because I've hit spacebar and it saves It. I've had to format this in preview amd Its taking an age
Bear in mind I've dropped the phone countless times, Its been in my back pocket for near 18 months and its been fun, not sure about getting another HTC tho. Like android, if I get the same issues on a diff phone then I'll see what other options are there nearer the time.
Galaxy maybe or whatever else will be on the market come Jan '13.
I'm not a fan of the fruit mob. It seems that whenever you buy something of theirs, often you have an attitude transplant that somehow blocks certain aspects of your vocabulary.
For instance. A phone suddenly has a prefix anytime its referred to, instead of it being what it really is, and that, is, a, phone.
Not restricted to their products y'understand. I mean I mind one time a few years ago, a guy at uni said "i'll email the lecturer from my blackbaggery"
He almost had to deal with black eye-ry. I take it this approach is ostensibly less embarrassing than just shouting LOOK AT ME....ME...ME...LOOK AT ME.....
I don't need a phone for that as anyone who's met me can verify
So that's one reason.
Another is cost, ajd a big one was bespoke software that gives you no choice but to use it should you wish to synch or connect to a pc. I like choice. It's an open market after all.
For this same reason I avoided Windows phones. I would rather not have zune infect my extensions and boot up every time I connect. Which is a shame cos I fancy tryin the phones out and I could link it up with lots of other MS stuff I use, xbox, mail etc.
I doubt this helps any but I hope the review sites give some insight. They are generally very good.
I like the look of the note, got a demo and would he good for work stuff I reckon but in the back pocket? Probably not.
