Title: My 2nd Fazer , gearbox issue?
Post by: matt7chunk on 14 May 2021, 06:16:39 pm
So just picked up my 2nd Fazer (left to me a late friend)

The bikes only done 16000 and it's a 1998 fzs600 , been sat for a long time so I've had the carbs off and cleaned them , drained the tank and repaired the petcock ,

After getting the carbs back on and firing her up she ran lovely , took her for a run up and down the road to see how she feels and she felt lovely

Now for the issue , 2nd gear seems to whine alot louder than any other gear , my 1999 Fazer doesn't make a sound anything like it ,

A bit worried about it, how worried should I be ? Is the gearbox ruined

Check the obvious first. Oil levels and chain tension - 35mm slack - The fzs is very fussy. Too tight you will get output shaft noise and clunky gear changes. Too loose and the gear change is clunky. Get teh tension right and the gear change is nice and smooth.

Next thing, 2nd gear speeds are where the wind speed isnt making too much noise so you are hearing the tyres (especially the front) on the road. Some make a huge amount of noise when they get 3/4 worn. Front wheel bearings can also be heard at these speeds if they are worn.

I did check the chain slack and gonna change the oil next and check for debris , just worrying as I already own a 99 Fazer and haven't heard anything like they befor ,

I've read the posts on 2nd gear jump out of gear and it's not doin that but I feel it could be a sign of it to come maby ?
