Title: Oil Level Light (5DM)
Post by: Billbott on 29 October 2020, 12:57:23 pm
I have an issue with my oil level light on my 1999 5DM:
When I switch on the ignition, the handbook says that it should be on, going off when started up – a self test.
The only light I see when I switch it on is the neutral light.
I have checked the bulb and its ok (swapped it with the known working neutral light)
My concern is it wont come on when it needs to (low oil level)
Has anyone else come across this / fixed it?

Check the connections at the switch, they are prone to corrosion, often just a clean up will do :)

In the sump pan, left hand side of the engine below and in front sprocket, it's the only thing with wires coming out of it  :)

Thanks, will try it later.
Same place as the one on my GPZ900  :)

it only lights up when the starter button is pressed. To test it, turn off the kil switch and press the starter.

Yeah, tried that, still didn't work. :(

I would suggest the bulb is the fault here then but as you have changed that, look at the wiring. The self test, does not test the switch, just the bulb.

Well if you still have the issue, and until you fix it,  you can always have a regular check on the oil level. I have my own since 2018 and I have no issues of oil consumption. So a regular check should prevent you from bigger issues.

Wiring 'seems' ok, nothing out of the ordinary. Switch connections also seem good...

MikeBike, indeed - I don't have an oil level check light on any of the others (except my Lc) - I would just prefer to have everything working.

If your sure the connections are both tight and corrosion free, the bulb if working check the wiring continuity and test the switch, as it's possible the wiring has broken/sorted and corrosion has penetrated into the switch.  Its a very simple system, it will be one or a couple of the above.
