My fuel pump runs for ages(and noisy)exactly 5 secs every time I turn on ignition, I thought once fuel is in bowls the pump wouldn't need to keep priming
itself every time.
I read on here to test fuel pump you can put a finger over the outlet of the pump and turn on ignition, see if pump stops or carries on (pressure check)..
Did that yesterday and pump keeps running (priming ?) for 5 sceonds with my finger on outlet ..(exactly same length of time as when I turn ignition on..)
Should it stop more or less straight away with my finger over it , or run for a few seconds before stopping ??
Cheers

Could It not just be weather/heat related?
-
Unfortunately not darrsi, it's been making the noise for a while now..
Just want to eliminate the pump as a problem I've got relating to the fuel system...
-
i always thought that was standard. i wouldnt worry about it its just how it does it, imagine it not doing that just after a fuel drain, there isnt a pressure switch in system so its a low pressure pump just to help out
always did it on mine and im sure a few more people will notice it now its been pointed out :-)
-
If you mean it does a series of clicks for a few seconds after ignition is turned on then yes that's perfectly normal.
Mine does it anyway.

Thanks for the replies peeps, it won't drive me bonkers now !!

The pump shouldn't run for 5 sec every time you turn the key. If the bike hasn't been started for a while, couple days etc yes as it's refilling the float bowls due to evaporation, but not if you've just stopped it parked it for couple hours, at the very most a couple clicks. When was the last time the fuel filter was changed? These become restricted over time and it takes longer for the pump to get return feed from the carbs so they pump longer. Have you get any leaks, smell of fuel etc? It's also possible the pump has had it's day.
-
I didn't think it should click that much either :rolleyes
I changed fuel filter about a month ago Gnasher...
Gonna have another look tomorrow and put a link pipe in and take the filter out, and see..
will post up results
Thanks again guys..

Got new pump coming, the leads were bullet connectors instead of proper 2 pin push connector, so I'm guessing must have had issues before ..

I hope you have more success than i am having getting hold of a decent pump that is new on my 3rd one now bought from 3 ebay sellers and are all crap 1 had 6mm pipes and not 10mm as it should be 1 doesn't work at all and the latest 1 sounds like a machine gun when running utter crap so please post how you get on and from where you got the pump from cheers :)
Mind you can get OEM pumps genuine yamaha part for a price of 478 pound plus the vat ...what a joke.....

Have you considered going down the repair route? A friend of mine did the same with his Deauville fuel pump and it worked a treat. Just a thought
-
Just a thought, you checked to see if anything is coming out of the overflow pipe?
It could be a problem with one or more of the floats sticking, so it's not building pressure and overflowing?
-
Deffo carbs ok, no back pressure or anything, float and fuel levels spot on, new pump fine.
No noises anymore !!
Pump was £19 from ebay with 2 year warranty and right size inlet and outlet pipes..slightly different from o.e pump..
So far so good
