Title: Hyperpro fork springs

My Hyperpro progressive springs have arrived. Would welcome forum members views on a couple of things.


1. The springs come supplied with SAE10W fork oil as the recommended grade. Personally, I'm inclined to stick with the 5W grade or maybe split the difference with 7.5W. Does anyone have any experience of different oil grades with these particular springs?


2. The recommended oil gap according to the instructions is 170mm. This is quite a bit different to the stock setting of 140mm. Again, does anyone have any recommendations about this - should I go with the Hyperpro recommended gap, the standard gap or something in between?


3. The instructions suggest that the springs should be installed with the shorter/tighter pitch coils at the top. The standard springs have the shorter/tighter coils at the bottom. I'm inclined to think that it doesn't really matter which way round they go as long as both forks are the same. Any views/opinions on this?

Have the same springs,  follow the recommended instructions. I am pleased with my bikes handling with a R6 rear shock
It did take a few adjustments to get it right . I followed all the recommended instructions with oil and levels.

and go with 150mm air gap I found 170mm is to much

Think I'm going to go with 7.5w (mixing the 10w hyperpro and 5w yamalube 50:50) and a 150mm air gap and see how it goes.

And then there’s a mixing calculator in the other thread.

Might not be advisable to use oil of different brands but might be ok. Mix a small amount of each first to check compatibility.

I tried to find the CST data for the Yamalube and Hyperpro oils but no luck. Although maybe not a precise science, I'm thinking mixing them 50:50 should give a reasonable approximation for a 7.5W oil.

I did exactly the same in terms of mixing but used Motul oil of the same type. I’m sure it will be fine 🙂

Out of curiosity, why don't you trust Hyperpro's choice of fork oil ? I'd have thought they were the best people to advise on what goes with their springs ?

I'm of the same opinion myself, they will have done enough R&D to understand what works best with their kits and wouldn't be reccomending anything that wouldn't give the best results for their customers. I can see that for linear springs a lighter oil might make sense to make them a bit plusher but progressives are already soft at the top of the stroke so lighter oil isn't really going to be of much benefit unless you're a lighter weight rider !?!  :lurk
