Title: Headlamp Adjustment
Post by: HarryHornby on 11 December 2019, 06:11:34 am
Hi All,

I rode my bike in the dark for the first time in ages last week and there were times when I could see FOC all on the road in front.  Turns out, my lights, as crap as they already are are pointing up into the trees.

Is it easy enough to lower the beam or is it a job for the pros?  I suspect even if I do it myself it won't be correct according to the MOT because I don't have the correct measuring kit, am I right?

Ta all.

To get them adjusted correctly a bike mot garage would be your best bet. If you have a Haynes manual it is incorrect, the vertical adjustments is the two outer screws on the back of light the two inner screws are for horizontal adjustments & not as stated in Haynes.

You can do it relatively well in front of a garage door. To test height the MOT man should get you to sit on the bike and measure to the centre of the headlamps. Take this height and pencil line it on the garage door. The cut off of the light should be below  the line at about 4m. There are some slight variances for different bulb heights but good enough rule of thumb. Of course this doesn’t check the dip left / right kick.

There are two screws for each reflector that you can get to when you turn the bars. One does up/down, the other left/right. Simple job to do using a wall or garage door.
