Title: Front fork help
Post by: buzzerboy on 10 April 2012, 06:21:46 pm
Hi all, I have just got a gen 1 1000 that has had ohlins fork springs fitted, problem is the preload is locking out at three rings from hard(both legs), I checked with ohlins and they are the correct springs, so any ideas why I cant screw out the adjustors to the 6th line?

have you had them apart and looked?

maybe they've not been assembled correctly.......... the blue preload adjuster just screws through the fork cap but if someone put a washer between the locknut and the blue adjuster that would stop the adjuster moving full travel.

okay, from your statements you know very little about suspension. what rate spring is fitted.....that is the important bit?
secondly it's a spring, not a penis, so it doesn't get hard. if it is a linear spring (most likely) all you are doing is removing the sag from the spring and raising the front ride height (undesirable ime).

Standard ohlins fork springs for gen1 fzs1000 but there not the prob, preload adjustors will only come out 3 rings from fully in as opposed to 6 rings as should be :rolleyes  oh I dont know too much about suspension :)

Sounds like the spacer and locknut were re-assembled incorrectly.  I presume previous owner installed the springs?  If so, you need to check their work and correct as necessary.

Not difficult.  Read this (http://www.yamahafz1oa.com/ravenriderssuspensionupgrade.shtml) to get an idea of what's inside and in particular, how to set the spacer and locknut so that the preload adjuster will screw on properly.

Ignore the parts about cutting the spring and spacer - it's not relevant to your issue.  Instead, focus on pics 23 and onwards.

 Good link Mike.
By the way, do you know why the spacer has a thread on it?

My preload will only adjust 3 1/2 lines also, whether on the forks or in a vice.

I havent worried about it as there is enough adjustment to set sag , adjusters in ravenriders pics also show just over 3 lines and I'm presuming he has them backed out .

Yup.  Ravenrider used a bit of threaded tube which he bought from a local plumbering shop.  It doesn't need to be threaded for any particular reason. :)
