Title: Clutch Cable Adjuster
Post by: darrsi on 19 October 2018, 06:31:02 am
Last night i was adjusting the clutch cable on my bike at both ends but nipped up the wheel a tad too much with a pair of pliers and felt it starting to cross thread, so immediately left it where it was. It's not bad, just not good either!

Anyway, after a bit of a search around for just the adjuster wheel thingy it turns out that it's cheaper to buy the wheel and the bolt together as a pair, but on searching i found a pair that were not only a bit fancy but more practical as well.

Don't forget these are only small in size so it won't turn your bike into Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.  :lol

Unfortunately they're from China, but it's not exactly an urgent thing.

Here's the normal one in case you fancy a tidy up.

They're gonna take a few weeks, or more, to arrive, but when they do i'll shed some more light on them.
Can't really go wrong at that price, and how the hell do they manage free postage?

Can't go wrong for £2.80 delivered. Got one on the way as well in lightning blue.

I've always gently nipped it up with pliers, the knurled outer edge is worn so it's just habit i s'pose.
The bike's 18 years old, so it's not done too bad.  :lol

they are made so you can adjust them without the  aid of tools so when in traffic and the clutch gets hot you can adjust it

I bought a pair of these billet blue coloured cable adjusters from eBay at a very good price around about 5 quid for a pair, but when they arrived I then realised although I have two levers I only need one adjuster as it’s a job fitting one on a hydrolic brake line

I fitted the new adjuster today while i was replacing the cable, as i had a bit of an issue with it.
I’m liking the slightly longer thread in comparison to the original.

There is a link on here about it somewhere, but as a quick reminder next time you change your clutch cable you will have to totally remove the front sprocket cover where the lower end of your clutch cable sits.
Before putting it back together, pop off the rubber bung on the front of the cover and fill the hole where the adjuster nut is with spray grease, i've always used White Grease, but each to their own.
Then using the spring loaded mechanism that the cable normally sits in, keep pumping it and it will draw in the grease and lubricate the bearings inside.
Just keep doing this until you know there's plenty of grease in there.
The bearings inside can get completely forgotten about, if you even knew they were there, but after plenty of greasing you'd be amazed how much smoother it can make your gear changing become.

Here's the thread if you've not read it before, it makes good reading and is a simple but very effective thing to do.

Was that the fix for the clicking noise you had?

The clicking noise is what started it all off.
It did go away once i'd greased the bearings, but as someone mentioned in the thread it's possible that the click "might" be caused by the little metal flap not being bent over enough to stop the end of the cable from moving about too much in the actuator.
