Title: Another noise thread. Clutch basket?
Post by: Kamikaze on 18 September 2017, 04:01:22 pm
torn between adding to another thread and not wanting to hijack,
I'm having some strange noises coming from the bike.
It's only present in 6th gear and only on accelerating.
If I let off the throttle it stops. If I clutch it it stops even while twisting the throttle.
Drop down a gear it goes away right away.

It's not having any effect on performance. Bike pulls hard. But the chattering is fairly loud.
Sounds like I'd imagine the bike would sound if the clutch pack was hitting off the arms of the clutch basket.
I know the xjr has a common issue with te pin on the back of the basket causin it to rattle but I don't think it's the same on the fazer.

Any ideas? Could it be the clutch basket?

if it is only in a certain gear, then I doubt it is clutch related but more likely to be gearbox related.

clutch only rattles at idle in neutral if you pull the clutch in and put it into gear the rattle stops so you would never hear the clutch rattle under power as it takes up the free play in the basket  more likely to be gearbox related mine whines a  bit in top gear but that pretty much what they do not rattle

So you think damaged 6th gear itself might be the cause?
I was thinking that was a possibility.

i would think so take the sump off that will give you a look at the gears ect

with the exhaust off it can be removed with engine in frame
order a new sump gasket, oil and filter

despite your best efforts to drain the oil you will still have some sitting in the sump so get lots of cardboard and rags to catch the oil
i also use a big roasting dish to catch anything that drops which would be in a good idea in your case as you will want to be looking at that oil to see if there are any shiney mettalic bits in there
