don't know if this has been covered before but if it has, meh!
Which twatnav do you use on your bikes, looking to get one for the fazer but can't decide.
Real world opinion is better than sales blurb methinks.
-
I've used the Tom Tom rider 2 for years. Never had any trouble with it, no reason to believe that the newer version would be any different.

'MEH!' WTF?

uninspiring; unexceptional.
"a lot of his movies are … meh"

I use Navmii on my phone. Simple and free but unless you have a power supply don't bother with it. It eats your battery up within 120 miles.

'MEH!' WTF?
WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING

Garmin Zumo 550 here, good bit o kit.
-
Proper road map book - research before I go - write road numbers, directions and place names on a piece of paper - store under clear pocket of tankbag - go.
-
I use a TomTom XL2 that I got for the car several years ago and put it in one of those waterproof holder things for mounting on a motorbike. (Off Ebay). Not as easy to use as a proper motorbike one but a lot cheaper and does what I need. A mate has a later car type TomTom and seems to have a few problems with it sometimes.
Mounted mine on a bracket above the clocks on my boxeye 600.
For a touch of luxury I added this sun shield made out of a plastic container that had previously held some soap capsule things for the washing machine.

So sorry 'meh'! WTF?

Picked up a Garmin Zumo 340LM from Aldi last year for £160. Stops my wife getting lost, but also picked up a spare mount off ebay for my bike for £25. Does the job fine for a basic no frills satnav, got EU maps for lifetime. BaseCamp soft isn't too bad for laying down routes, though has a bit of a learning curve. Just a bit of a bummer you'll need to until until that special few days of the year when Aldi next get one back in stock...

Likewise. It's simple and does the job.

Using the exact same unit & case as Limax but mounted between bar clamps.
-
Zumo 550 as well, had it a good few years now and never had any problems.
-
I've still got my TomTom Rider 2 as well. Had to replace the battery recently, and broke two of the lugs putting it back together. Assuming it won't need to come apart again, I Araldited it (badly) back together round the seal. For some reason it's now known as 'SnotNav' :)
-
My mobile phone, any app, Google maps etc, blue tooth headset, brilliant, on screen in bar mount off eBay cheap..cigerette 'lighter power supply, sub adaptor to phone
-
Used a zumo 550 for years - it's died now :-( not rushing to get a new one though as my trips have been somewhat curtailed by kids :-(.
Would definitely get another though when I get more freedom again!
-
Garmin Zumo, hardwired in - connects to the headset. Saves stopping to look at maps or trying to remember where your going!
-
I'm with you scotty, bluetooth connection to the helmet, get spoken directions, speed camera warnings, music and phone if you want it!!!

Bit of a safety hazard having that thing stuck on your front screen, especially if your journey crosses from one page to another. Bet at motorway speeds the pages flip back and forth by themselves.
I left my last AA map plugged into my computer overnight and it never did update.

I use Tom Tom 820 Go-Live same case off evilBay, had a spare Go-Pro handle bar mount/clamp set the angle of it up marked joints with Tip X pen took it apart and super glued it together, works a treat, one thumb screw and it's completely removed from the bike, mounting and all.

Thanks for the replies fellas but how are you supplying power to your device, just been looking at various connectors but I'm not convinced that they're waterproof.
Was looking at wiring it from the battery as I don't want to fiddle with the loom.
Perhaps this should be a thread on its own
-
I use: -
- Fuse tap (Ebay 221696218978) - used to piggyback onto the switched headlight circuit
- Female cigarette lighter adapter (Ebay 291991902491) - stored under seat, connected to live from fuse tap above
- Male Cigarette USB charger - (Ebay 262774719132) - Double port so the missus can charge her phone as well
- 2 m long USB cable (Ebay 252836570885) - Cable goes under petrol tank and is cable tied to the bars, the exposed end is tucked under the tank when not in use.
The whole lot cost about £7 and has worked rain and shine for the last 5 years or so.
-
Sounds good, but how do you get the cable into the waterproof cover?

:groan The standard Satnav charger lead with it's tiny winy connector goes through the itsy bitsy hole in the case. The other end goes into either a USB or cigarette socket.
-
Yes I know where the USB/Cigarette socket end goes.... and thank you for taking the trouble to explain there's an itsy bitsy hole in the (not quite fully waterproof then) Satnav cover.
I'll stick with my fully waterproof Rider methinks :D
-
So, without wishing to sound dumb but never having had a bike specific twatnav, it sounds to me like there really is no way to keep the device watertight if it's plugged into a mains connector thats in the fairing, as I've seen on a couple of bikes.
Best bet is a cig lighter socket under the seat wired to the batt then. Probably.
-
Most bike specific Satnavs have two wires you splice into the loom. The Satnav sits in a purpose built cradle which is waterproof (perhaps not if submerged in a river!)
-
I don't go anywhere near looms.
If I can foc up putting a seat back on just imagine what I could do with a loom.

I put a male Optimate plug on the end of mine and run the cable under the tank and seat so I can plug it in to the Optimate charging lead under the seat which is fused.

:agree

All the best ideas are the simplest - love it :thumbup :thumbup
